Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Jun 05, 2020 4:19 pm Hi all, We did a full renovation on our first home in England (non-structural) and bits and pieces in Australia to make some cosmetic changes in Australia using tradies. I'm now thinking of adding a level to our federation semi in Sydney's east and renovate the existing house (new kitchen and bath). Debating between having a builder to look after everything (paying 20% builder's markup) or employing a professional project manager while I can register as a home builder. It seems we will save roughly 10% of total build in the second approach (a decent sum!). Both my husband and I are busy working professionals with kids, so time is a limited resource to us. Having said that, I'm comfortable with numbers, budgeting, negotiation is part of my job and turn-key is not our style.... Anyone has gone down the homebuilder route with juggling work and kids? Really looking forward to your stories. Thanks!
