Browse Forums Eco Living 1 Sep 18, 2008 3:36 pm We are planning to build a new house and are interested in one of those specially designed environmentally friendly designed houses. Has anyone built one of these, and do you know any designers/builders/architects who do this type of work in Brisbane?
If you have built a house like this, would you mind telling me what your budget was, or how it compared to building a normal house? We have a fairly big budget, we don't want a huge house, but not a shoe box, so wondering if our budget will stretch that far. My husband will probably build the house in conjunction with builders he knows which will reduce the cost, but still not sure if we can afford it? I don't want to approach designers yet for fear that they will laugh at us when we tell them our budget Re: Eco-Friendly house designers/architects - Brisbane 2Sep 18, 2008 4:05 pm We have just supplied a fitout for a customer who is bulding an EXTREMELY eco friendly house in an "Eco Village" in Currumbin Valley.
The whole development is being built to very strict ecofriendly guidelines. http://www.sustainable-homes.org.au/00_ ... _coast.pdf Obviously I can't post my client's details here but I think there are some good links to the project in the article above. For what it is worth the whole village is fantastic and the housing is as good as any I have seen - but don't ask me about budgets...the kitchen wasn't cheap but nor was it the most expensive project we have ever done. Cheers, Earl Re: Eco-Friendly house designers/architects - Brisbane 4Sep 18, 2008 4:28 pm I don't know about the Insight article - not one I saw, but the village is a very cool place - it is designed in little clusters of 8 - 10 houses surrounding a large communal area...like the old English village layouts.
There are no fences on the blocks and no cats or dogs are allowed. I can highly recomend if you get a chance to drive down (or up) and check it out - the development is on Village Way off Currumbin Creek Road. We're building a passive solar house in Tassie, so different requirements to you. But we chose our designer by going on a Sustainable homes tour. We saw about half a dozen houses that day, by about 4 different designers. It helped us realise that the designer we were looking at wasn't for us...we didn't like the look or feel of his houses...and helped us choose a new designer. The beauty of this was that we got to talk to the owners and the designers about the whole process and look at the finished product. Having said all of that, there was a Solar homes tour last W/E. But you could try contacting ANZSES in your state or go to http://www.sustainablehouseday.com/loca ... nues.shtml to see the location of some houses in your area. You never know, you might still be able to get some information. The names of the designers are usually on the information sheet. We also looked at designers in the Yellow pages that listed themselves as "Sustainable" or "eco". Good luck 'chelle We have a hand-over date...15/10...but I won't hold my breath! http://people-in-glass-houses.blogspot.com/ Re: Eco-Friendly house designers/architects - Brisbane 6Sep 18, 2008 5:21 pm Thanks guys. I might go down to the village at currumbin, it sounds great.
I am so disappointed we missed all the open days at the houses last weekend. But I'll check out the website thanks chelle. Re: Eco-Friendly house designers/architects - Brisbane 7Sep 21, 2008 8:07 pm Strummer - might have even been some friends of friends of mine who I know are mid build in the valley
C&D - I'd also goto an ATA meeting in fortitude valley and ask the question of the people at the meeting. They should know who to talk to in QLD. I can ask my friends friends if you're still looking for names. Steve Re: Eco-Friendly house designers/architects - Brisbane 8Sep 23, 2008 4:29 pm yak_chat - yes still looking for names, although not really ready to 'talk' to anyone at the moment, just really at the research stage. But I'd like some names so i can check out their designs/style, with a view to talking to a few people in the future.
I got some information sent out from the govt yesterday about smart/sustainable housing, very interesting, it's amazing what a difference a good designed house can make. But even getting all this info, and researching ourselves, I stil would really like a 'professional' to design something for us. Re: Eco-Friendly house designers/architects - Brisbane 9Sep 24, 2008 5:07 pm Try SALA Homes. They are the real deal when it comes to eco-house building. They are a kit home builder but do it better than anyone else that we looked at. They have a village that you can village to get a real feel for what they do.
