Just dropping in to say we are so happy with our Hills Solar Evacuated Tube HWS. We mounted it on the west facing roof and have had no problems at all. Was on electric boost over winter. But it's back onto solar now and working brilliantly! Re: Solar Hot Water - which one to chose? 22Feb 21, 2011 8:15 pm My father was an early adopter of solar water heater when the technology was still nascent. It worked very well for us as most of our hot water needs were met. In winter it was not so reliable. The old system has sprung some leaks and fixing it is out of question. There is water condensation under the glass covering and a couple of people I consulted advised us to replace it as the technology is so much more advanced. I was reading this thread to get an idea about the solar waters and their technologies. The majority opinion here seems to veer towards evacuated tubes hws. Any any ideas about the cost? How much does system alone cost? As we have the piping and other infrastructure of the old system in place. Roger D Re: Solar Hot Water - which one to chose? 23Feb 22, 2011 9:24 am I think it was around $6000 to install the Hills evacuated tube system in our new house. Don't quote me though! This included a discount RECS rebate. As you would be replacing an existing HWS, not installing in a new house, you will get a further discount. This is something we didn't realise - many of the energy efficiency rebates don't apply to new homes. We're still very happy with it almost a year after installation Re: 24Feb 22, 2011 11:21 am FireFox prolly going to pick Chromagen solar with gas booster/backup; but i dont think they are aussie made and owned? -Nathan Chromagen's an Israeli company.
