Browse Forums Eco Living 1 Jul 20, 2008 5:33 pm Hi Steve and anyone else who can offer advice and assistance,
We are getting a 2000 litre rainwater tank connected to flush all toilets with our build. The tank will be swapped for a 5000 litre as soon as we move in. I am also wanting to utilise some kind of greywater system and was wondering what systems are recommended. I'm very confused. I don't want to change and muck around too much with plumbing, I want an add on system to install after handover. Also is the 2000 litre tank just best to connect to other downpipes and use as extra garden etc water? Also would rainwater be ok to use to top up the dogs water? Or would it somehow be hazardous? (the tank will actually be more convenient than the freshwater tap) A bit uneducated on all this. Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. ie 2k tank to a 5k tank. Builder not offering the big tank as an option? As for grey water systems - I like to think of grey water as a use it now resource. Storing it gets messy expensive and really too much trouble IMO. So some simple and cost effective options - Get the bathroom waste water and the washing machine waste water all sent to a grey water collection/distribution point. If the plumber does not want to do this have the pipe run it so at a later point in time you can easily divert this grey water - to wherever you want to. Have the roof downpipes connected to the rainwater tank. and the overflow then goes into the stormwater system. Plumb the water from the rainwater tank via a pump I assume - so it can be used to fill the toilet and also used for the washing machine. Have a diversion device, be it a manual or an automatic one that switches from rainwater to mains should it not rain enough so the toilet etc still fills. Dog water. Rainwater is perfectly fine straight out of the tank for ther dogs - have you ever followed your dog near a creek at any point in time And plan the garden out so you use the greywater each time you have had a shower or bath or within 12 hours of that timeframe. But be carfeul of greywater restirctions for surface watering of leafy vegetables. Steve Re: Grey water suggestions please. 3Jul 20, 2008 5:56 pm Nosey Steve,
All the handover changes because the builder MUST supply a tank with the plumbing option. My friend runs a business making water tanks so much more cost effective to get a biggie off her and hubby at cost than upgrading with builder. But it does leave us with a 2000 litre tank. Room is not so much of a worry. Block is 1638m2. Any preferences on greywater systems? Planning vegie garden/fruit trees on side of block with freshwater tank. Grey water outside laundry on other side of block so it will be hard to make a mistake with watering options. Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. But from a quick review of some mags I have and from the web here is a link for some more info for you. http://www.planetark.com/products/PAGreyWaterInfo.pdf more info here http://www.enviro-friendly.com/greywater-systems-australia.shtml and I think as a low cost basic laundry only solution if you want some form of storage system this would work - and it auto diverts to the sewer if you do not use all the water. http://www.enviro-friendly.com/nylex-greywater-diverta.shtml Nosey Steve Good deal re the tanks Re: Grey water suggestions please. 5Sep 07, 2008 7:23 pm We wanted greywater or at least to be ready for it. However builder said it was all too hard (expensive). Now after looking at the pipes that are ready to be covered in concrete slab next week I can see how easy it would have been
As Steve suggests just get them to put in separate pipes for shower and bath drains, have these pipes go outside the slab. Later you can connect them to a grey water system without having to take a jackhammer to your floor regards sean Hi, Looking to add an ensuite to one of the bedrooms and make it a Master BR.
