Browse Forums Eco Living 1 Jul 16, 2015 11:37 pm Hi everyone, I'm after some recommendations on insulated garage doors. The supplier my builder uses doesn't mention it on their website, so I'm thinking it's probably not all places that do it. Thanks. Re: Insulated garage door 2Jul 17, 2015 7:27 am I do recall seeing insulated garage doors in my local Bunnings store. I actually insulated a standard garage door at my last house as a DIY job using foil board. Re: Insulated garage door 3Jul 17, 2015 11:09 am Bashworth has a good option, and several have done the same on their doors. You can't really insulate a roller door though, but a sectional or panel lift door you can, and they can already be supplied with insulated panels. If your garage faces north like mine, then get a colour like Surfmist as I did with mine. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld. We will also be having a roller door as a "back door" to the garage, so I should definitely do that in Surfmist. Althom Following is a link to a supplier in Perth http://www.insulatedgaragedoors.com.au/ Thanks Althom. Do you have any experience with them? Re: Insulated garage door 6Jul 18, 2015 12:25 pm Just curious as to how heavy the doors are? Years ago timber doors were all the rage..unfortunately the weight of the doors werent always taken into consideration in the garage design, over time this caused all sorts of problem with support tracks fixed to the walls, the vibration resulted in the brickwork continually cracking. Designer,Engineer (Civil,Const & Envir),Builder,Concrete & Masonry Contract.Struct Repairs Re: Insulated garage door 7Jul 18, 2015 12:48 pm No personal experience with them but am looking to replace our existing west facing panel door with one. Currently have 6mm foil insulation fitted to our door but I believe the foam and double skin would be more effective. Good idea to ask re increased mass and effect on mounting to walls etc. I would imagine an upgraded motor would be required. For info the 6mm foil insulation I added increased door mass by just over 2kg. We had our door professionally adjusted for the additional mass. Re: Insulated garage door 8Jul 19, 2015 11:55 am I visited GDI yesterday and the guy there was very helpful. Their motor takes into account the increased weight. Their door is rated at R1.83 and has a thermal break. I forgot to ask about seals. Certainly worth a look into I think. I also went to Eden-Roc but the guy there didn't know what an R-value was and couldn't even tell me the name of their supplier, so that was a waste of time. Next on my hit-list is B&D, as I like their range of colours and finishes. Re: Insulated garage door 9Jul 19, 2015 12:21 pm Seals would enable air conditioning of your garage if it is intended to be used for more than just car storage - small dedicated evap or reverse cycle probably better than hooking it into the rest of the house. Re: Insulated garage door 12Jul 19, 2015 9:12 pm Althom I'd agree, just fitting the thin foil insulation sheet made a huge difference to our garage. If I remember correctly Bashworth you used foilboard which I'd assume to be even more effective? Yes I used foil board fixed with builders foam so in effect I got around 15mm of insulation across the face of the metal. Where the purpose made doors win over my approach is that with the DIY approach there is just a butt joint between the panels. . . The purpose made doors I saw had a sort of tongue and groove seal between panels. The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get !
