Browse Forums Eco Living 1 Jun 22, 2015 5:45 pm Hi All We are building a timber frame Scyon linea clad house. We want to get the best insulation we can in the walls. I am thinking of installing king span air cell 65 and earth wool 2.5hd. The Air cell is rated at R1.7 and the earth wool R2.5. My reasoning is the Air cell will work better in summer and the earth wool better in winter. Is my theory sound? Or are there any better products to use? cheers rob Re: Insulating a Timber frame Home 2Jun 22, 2015 7:11 pm We just had our extension clad in MgO board, light weight product also. In the walls we have 3.0R Green Stuff polyester batts with a Wall wrap called Klober Permo air. Hope that helps. Re: Insulating a Timber frame Home 3Jun 22, 2015 8:19 pm I clad my house with Scyon linea cladding. This product requires a breathable membrane installed between the wall framing and the cladding. I do not think that king span air cell 65 is "breathable". I would check with James Hardie and Kingspan to clarify this situation before installing Kingspan air cell. Re: Insulating a Timber frame Home 4Jun 23, 2015 11:14 am This is the quote from the kingspan website. "Kingspan AIR-CELL Permishield® (Patent No. 2012100976) is a revolutionary vapour-permeable barrier and insulation wrapped up in a single product." It looks like it is breathable. Re: Insulating a Timber frame Home 6Jul 09, 2015 6:59 pm From the website, it looks like the Air-cell 65 has an R value of only 0.2. The R1.7 value may be taking into account the effect of the foil, but if it's sandwiched between insulation on one side, and weatherboards on the other side, then the foil won't have much effect. The foil really needs an air gap on the foil face to have an effect. So to get much out of the foil, you may need to batten out the weatherboards, so they are 20mm clear of the foil. Re: Insulating a Timber frame Home 7Jul 09, 2015 10:34 pm Stewie D- I have the Greenstuff R3.0 batts in the wall. Re: Insulating a Timber frame Home 8Jul 10, 2015 10:29 am So how thick are your walls ? Standard 90mm timber frame ? The highest density batts I know about are the higher density ones that are rated at R2.5 from Bradford ( and maybe some of the other manufacturers now ). The only info I can find about R 3.0 Greenstuf batts are for ceilings and they are 185mm thick. That's why I asked. I'd love to install those in our walls rather than R 2.5. This is the page I've been looking at ( amongst others ) to find out about R 3.0 wall batts. http://www.autex.com.au/greenstuf/greenstuf-batts/ Stewie Re: Insulating a Timber frame Home 9Jul 10, 2015 12:50 pm Stewie D my mistake, I double checked my builder and we have R2.5 in the external walls. Our walls are 90mm thick. We have R4.0 in the ceiling and the autex quietstuff in the internal walls. All insulation purchased from Solartex- http://www.solartex.com.au/default.asp, located on the northern beaches. Thanks Pulse, thats really helpful and very much appreciated. Also thanks for the pointer on sheathing, thats me watching too many american youtube videos! 6 2107 Engineering timber is certainly a less fuss option, times cheaper to supply and install and better withstands humidity. 1 11530 Long time forum searcher first time asker.
