Browse Forums Eco Living 1 May 08, 2015 10:18 am Hi all, and apologies in advance if this is a FAQ. I'm currently planning a new build, including a 3Kw solar system. At this stage I have no details of the system, nor have I been asked to make any choices about how the system works. However, during my electrical appointment, the consultant told me that I cannot use the power I generate, and that the feed-in tariff is the *only* benefit. Basically the solar system feeds into the grid, and my house consumes from the grid, and those two systems are completely separate. This seems to be in direct contradiction to a lot of what I've read here on the forum, with numerous discussions about moving your consumption to the daytime in order to maximise your use of your own generated power, etc. So, what's the story? Are there different systems in play here? Will I have to choose between a "feed to the grid" system and a "use my own" system? Is my consultant just wrong? Cheers, Adam Re: Confusion about how solar systems work 2May 08, 2015 10:21 am What state are you in? The feedback is incorrect for NSW at least. In fact, the current feed-in tariff is so low here that there's not much point producing more than what you can consume during daylight hours (this might change in the future as storage gets cheaper). Thanks Matt. I'm in NSW. And yeah, agree 6c FIT is almost worthless. Separately to the main topic of this post, but my new longer term goal is to install a Tesla Powerwall or two and generate and store close to 100% of my usage. Re: Confusion about how solar systems work 4May 08, 2015 10:41 am I'm getting a 6kw system installed on Monday which should match my daytime usage (big house, ducted a/c, pool). Leaving me only the night usage to pay for. Re: Confusion about how solar systems work 5May 08, 2015 8:29 pm Adam_C So, what's the story? Are there different systems in play here? Re: Confusion about how solar systems work 6May 08, 2015 8:43 pm There are two types of metering: Net Metering, and Gross Metering. The consultant appears to be describing gross metering. That was a useful option back when high feed-in tariffs were available, but I think new installs are all going to net metering.
