Browse Forums Eco Living Re: Which Solar HWS have you got? 21Feb 18, 2015 6:54 pm I'll try and find out some pricing tomorrow. PV-T panels with a storage tank and an electricity inverter should be cost comparable to a PV system and a solar HW system. Tractile is a complete roof system so you'd need to compare the cost of an entire roof system (battens and cladding), a solar PV system and a solar HW system. If you did that, the Tractile system probably would be significantly more expensive, but it is a very attractive aesthetic solution so you'd need to consider it in that context. We were always intending to do solar pv after at some point and I wanted solar hw but a gas hw system was included so we went with it (instant gas hw was a $800 upgrade. I didn't think solar was worth asking about! ) Re: Which Solar HWS have you got? 23Feb 19, 2015 6:24 am You can probably keep your gas hot water with the solimpeks system. The PV-T panels would do most of the heating work, and the gas would be your storage tank and booster heat. Re: Which Solar HWS have you got? 25Jun 02, 2015 5:44 pm B-Man why do a lot of people turn their boost off in summer? if the water is hot enough its not going to boost anyway...? The other thing that can happen is this; - Your tank is heated all day from the sun - You use this hot water late at night for showers . - If you have the boost OFF, then your tank stays below maximum all night and then heats up again the next day . - If you have the boost ON, then your tank might heat up using electricity overnight and then the benefit of the next day's sun is lost as your tank is already hot from the boost. From my readings around the interwebs, it really does seem to depend on how your system is set up (as well as what sort of system you have installed). It also depends how your household uses hot water. A morning-shower family will have different requirements to a night-shower family. I'm about to get an Apricus 400L/40 tube, but I won't know for sure how it all goes until we move in and start using it later this year. Just switch boosting off during summer (unless you run out of hot water) and turn back on when the temp drops or when you get some overcast days. I have a Thermann 22 evacuated tube solar hot water system with 250L ground mounted tank. Thermann is just a rebranded Apricus system. Works a treat, I still easily get enough hot water on overcast days, but I am in North qld where it doesnt get very cold!
