Browse Forums Eco Living 1 Aug 16, 2014 6:54 pm I have been reading about this and I am now inclining towards the CFL lights due to the inefficiencies of downlights. Has anyone thought about the type of light they would consider for the house or has replaced DL with CFL? 23/06/2014 - Paid deposit 21/07/2014 - ordered the survey and tender 13/08/2014 - soils test sample taken 14/08/2014 - survey done today 30/08/2014 - Pre-color consultant aptmnt Re: Lighting - any thoughts on Downlights vs CFL lights? 2Aug 16, 2014 8:11 pm 'Downlight' doesn't really mean anything in terms of efficiency, it just means a light that's usually recessed into the ceiling. I don't know if you can still buy downlight fittings for the 35W or 50W halogen globes whivh are more inefficient than CFL's, for example? As another example, you can get CFL downlights. We're using primarily LED downlights in our place, except for flourescent tubes in the garage & a fancyish pendant on the stairs. Re: Lighting - any thoughts on Downlights vs CFL lights? 3Aug 16, 2014 9:29 pm I have opted for CFL down lights. These particular ones are large and fit two bulbs in the enclosure. 4 of them is enough to brightly light our lounge. The LED's on offer would have required 12 or so in the same area. Re: Lighting - any thoughts on Downlights vs CFL lights? 4Aug 16, 2014 9:39 pm We will be going with led lighting of all sorts, including downlights, lighting that takes the normal bayonet or edison screw with led globes to suit. Pricing is still coming down on LED lighting all the time, so it is becoming more and more of a 'no brainer' to go LED for everything, particulary in a new house. Re: Lighting - any thoughts on Downlights vs CFL lights? 6Aug 17, 2014 10:44 am Ponzu but the pricing the builder charges you for each additional point in the ceiling inst coming down in price Sadly that is quite correct. Best way that has been mentioned by many others, particulary in single storey homes, is to get the very basics in, and then get the nice stuff added in after hand over. I'm owner building, but I'm just installing batten holders on the ceiling and putting LED globes in to them. That way we have some decent lighting, and choose what we really want after we've lived in the place for a little while. I can guarantee that if we put the nice stuff in before moving in, we'd be wishing we'd done something differently. At least this way we can be sure of what we want. Anyway, the OP was asking if they should go for LED or CFL for their downlights, and I still reckon LED's without doubt. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld. Re: Lighting - Downlights vs CFL lights vs Pendant lights 7Aug 17, 2014 1:50 pm No doubt Downlight is functional and fairly popular but it just lack that wow factor especially for new home. Just introduce some replica lighting like Replica Jeremy Pyles Minaret Lamp (http://www.replicalights.com.au/replica ... aret-lamp/) over kitchen bench, you just added some character to your new home. If you worries about electricity bill, just change bulb over to LED, or you could go this Replica Tom Dixon Fin Obround (http://www.replicalights.com.au/pendant ... -with-led/) which comes with LED bulb. Lighting - any thoughts on Downlights vs CFL lights? 8Aug 17, 2014 5:26 pm Thanks for responses, when I said downlighting I meant the lots of LED lights vs CFL in a light that is not in the roof but outside. The reason I ask is because the current downlighting with halogen bulbs is just not good enough, the light is very focused, with 200 watts total light it only illuminates the area under those lights whereas a single CFL bulb would easily illuminate more area. I agree that running costs of LED are lower than what we have currently but to install it will cost approximately $125 per light and will require at least 25 of those, don't mind paying for them but will they still have the same issue of not illuminating area wider than their limited beam. I think i like the idea of having CFLs in the roof as downlighta. 23/06/2014 - Paid deposit 21/07/2014 - ordered the survey and tender 13/08/2014 - soils test sample taken 14/08/2014 - survey done today 30/08/2014 - Pre-color consultant aptmnt Re: Lighting - any thoughts on Downlights vs CFL lights? 9Aug 17, 2014 9:00 pm Perhaps your current lights are spot lights. We have wide angled ones with I think 35 degrees, 6x in the living and 5x in the meals area and they are quite bright. Back then we even added dimmers to get them to a more comfortable brightness to watch TV. Re: Lighting - any thoughts on Downlights vs CFL lights? 10Aug 18, 2014 11:29 am I'd do your homework regarding LED downlights. They have come a long way in the last couple of years. I would also look at how many Lumens they produce which is a better indication of light output than watts. An efficient 10w LED bulb will produce 30-50% more light than an inefficient or early technology 12w bulb. There are so many other things to consider too like distance between the lights, the actual rooms they are going into, ceiling height etc. Stewie Lighting - any thoughts on Downlights vs CFL lights? 11Aug 19, 2014 8:34 am Stewie D I'd do your homework regarding LED downlights.
