Re: Worth it? “H2grO greywater” electric diverter irrigation 3Jan 28, 2014 10:30 am I have to agree Brian. I read that text you linked to ( I think I've read it before when I had a look at your excellent site a while back ). We considered a grey water recycling part to our upcoming build but the money you have to spend on a decent system isn't worth it in my opinion. We opted to go for just a bigger rainwater tank. We will however probably install the pipework for a GW system during the build but not connect it for a just in case scenario. The other thing to consider for a system like this is that I think any GW system is supposed to be inspected each year, incurring a fee ( health dept rules I read somewhere a while back ). The 2 way diverter fitted to the 50 mm outside pipe didn't cost much (about 15 years ago), was easy to fit and the water is used on the garden in the immediate area. Re: Worth it? “H2grO greywater” electric diverter irrigation 5Jan 28, 2014 12:41 pm I thought you just had to use a low phosphorous detergent but there are quite a few other things in the detergents used that are harmful to your plants and garden if using GW recycling... http://www.choice.com.au/reviews-and-te ... arden.aspx I think the secret is to just use the rinse water as Save H2O suggests. Re: Worth it? “H2grO greywater” electric diverter irrigation 7Feb 11, 2014 10:21 pm A good read SaveH2O.
I've often thought that the water from baths and showers would have the lowest impact especially where eco-friendly soaps and shampoos are used and would be ideal for greywater systems. Mostly because these two appliances use the largest amount of water for relatively little contamination ( if you've ever seen someone like my daughter take a twenty minute shower you'll know exactly what I mean ) ! We may be headed in this direction as well for our upcoming build after all. Edit : A couple of things that I thought worth mentioning in the pdf you linked to. "On the basis of this very limited sample there was some evidence that the ‘eco-friendly’ products were more harmful to the soils tested than the mainstream products. This is possibly due to the use of sodium chloride salt in many of these products." "There was no indication the so called ‘eco- friendly’ products were more suitable for greywater irrigation systems than mainstream products." Plans all but completed ( don't laugh, we are up to Revision 35 ! I have done countless versions and 3D renders for my other half who has a bit of a problem relating 2D plans and elevations to the real thing ) and waiting on a few reports back from a geotech engineer. We need to finish the survey. The guy that does all my surveying did a quick one for me a few months back - just the levels but I want him to peg the two side boundaries. Then plans into the council which will be a 50:50 proposition to get through on the first go as there are a couple of things we are bending the rules on so we will see how that goes.
