Browse Forums Eco Living 1 Feb 05, 2008 9:11 am Lighting manufacturer Osram has launched what it claims to be an environmentally friendly replacement for the common incandescent light bulb.
The new Halogen Energy Saver range is a world-first, the company says, and comes in preparation for the planned phase out of incandescent light bulbs in Australia by October 2009. Halogen Energy Savers look like conventional light bulbs, so they can be used in a greater number of applications. Unlike other eco-friendly light bulb solutions, such as Compact fluorescent bulbs, the Energy Savers can also be dimmed, and are designed to give off a warm light, instead of the bright, white light. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The Energy Saver claims to last about twice as long as an incandescent bulb, equating to about 30 percent less electricity. Osram says its new range is also made with eco-friendly materials, including 20 percent recycled glass – they are also recyclable and contain no mercury. The range is available in different shapes and prices start from RRP $2.99 for the Halogen Energy Saver Classic Shape. http://osram.com.au/halogen/Final%20post%20event%20release.pdf Re: Osram Unveils Eco-Friendly Light-Bulb Successor 2Feb 05, 2008 9:29 am Cool.
Thanks for the post Matt. I'll do some comparisions, butfor a few areas this light is at least a start in the right direction. Amazing what a difference a mandate can do to making companies create viable products. I have the same view on eco housing. If the govt truely got tough, house desings would change immensly. Steve Re: Osram Unveils Eco-Friendly Light-Bulb Successor 4Feb 05, 2008 9:32 am matt,
Have you lost your mind? You're the last person I'd expect information for an eco-friendly device! Information on how to remove those ugly eaves from your house maybe, but nothing eco. The light bulb looks like a great idea. By the looks of it, no loss from a transformer and hopefully a full quartz halogen (rather than a glass halogen) core. I'll have to look into its lumens per watt later, but hopefully it's at least twice the lumens per watt. Nice find. Here you go: http://www.osram.com.au/halogen/Halogen%20Energy%20Saving%20Brochure_lowres.pdf All the info you need.... I Ithink 28watts for 345 lumens and 42 watts for 630 lumens in the classic design. Re: Osram Unveils Eco-Friendly Light-Bulb Successor 9Feb 05, 2008 11:06 am Forget these, they are only slighly more effecient than normal incandescent light bulbs.
Type Lumens Watts Lumens/Watt Incandescent 693 60 12 Osram HES 630 42 15 CFL 880 15 59 LEDs will one day get above 100 lumens per watt, but don't hold your breath. So unless you need dimable supplementary mood lighting, the Oscram HES lights are not going to help. CFLs are still the best option. BTW, the theoretical maximum for a white light source is 242.5 lumnes/watt and for a monochrome light 683 lumens per watt. Anything below these figures goes out as heat. Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: Osram Unveils Eco-Friendly Light-Bulb Successor 10Feb 05, 2008 12:40 pm I think this is the classic case of Osram trying to "get around" the new laws. Make a product that is ever so slightly more efficient, throw in 20% recycled glass (give me a break) and then market it for all you are worth.
Incidently, dimmable CFL and soft colour CFLs do exist and so do bulbs of all shapes and sizes, CFL's don't use mercury, last 4 to 8 times as long as incandescents and use 80% less electricity and they know this perfectly well but they will ignore the facts fot their own intrests. MARKETING.....<shakes head> Re: Osram Unveils Eco-Friendly Light-Bulb Successor 11Feb 05, 2008 1:19 pm Thanks Casa,
You've just saved me from doing some sums I think LED's are good for low lighting in areas that people do not need a bright light in. I saw some neat strip LED lighting red, white or yellow - 5 volt at Altronics yesterday when I was in picking up some parts. Pretty bright and only 90 mw current draw - $11 per strip and could easily run of a 6 volt solar recharged battery and be on at night via a light sensor to give some ambient light. I think this low level LED lighting is ideal as hallway, toilet, bathroom and entrance area (indoor and outdoor) as well as patio mood lighting. It is bright enough to see where you are going without blinding the night vision. Steve Re: Osram Unveils Eco-Friendly Light-Bulb Successor 12Feb 05, 2008 1:37 pm OK....
Thats it! I am never trying to do the right thing again You guys suck Re: Osram Unveils Eco-Friendly Light-Bulb Successor 13Feb 05, 2008 1:46 pm Don't be disheartned Matt.
As the man himself (Thomas Edison) who made the light bulb a commerial reality after many years of failure and two years after he put the idea to rest, he tried again.
