Browse Forums Eco Living Re: Decking using sustainable wood? 21Jan 27, 2012 7:18 pm its timely that you suggest to start collecting now. i drove past an old house that has finally been demolished after being wrecked in cyclone yasi. well i guess it didnt really have a lot of useful timber in it, but ive started thinking and looking out for sources of timber. im currently building my third timber yacht. i cringe now thinking about all the off-cuts we have tossed out or burnt over the years. admittedly most are short lengths but still, it is a pity that any timber at all gets wasted. i would likely use new timber for the interior flooring but im happy to use timber sourced from demolition yards for the main beams for the roof etc as these will be exposed and dressed. so i suppose the antique look of refurbished timber will do well in my home. plus i will be needing some heavy beams and post timbers for the interior fitout. i like the chunky/rustic look but contrasted with chic clean simplistic lines and white/natrual paint tones. Re: Decking using sustainable wood? 22Mar 09, 2012 11:02 pm I just skimmed through this thread and am surprised no-one has mentioned modwood? http://www.modwood.com.au Pic of it installed at my build: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Built 3br house in Glenorchy, Tas in 2001 * * * Built 5br courtyard house in Lenah Valley, Tas in 2011 - Homeone thread / Blog Re: Decking using sustainable wood? 23Apr 06, 2012 9:24 am I have started to see some changes in the price of sustainable material choices. I was delighted to see that I could get timber bifolds for less than alluminium frames. The U-value of timber framed V's Alluminum is way better http://wp.me/p1NLEr-6x. That said when I requested that the sills of all my plantation Vic Ash frames be made from Spotted Gum not Merbu, I was slugged with a 3% increase. I did this because I want the Sills to be from a sustainable Australian hardwood, not a rainforest timber from Indonesia. I plan to build my decks out of spotted gum, although I will hunt around at a few local yards for recycled material now after reading this forum. Re: Decking using sustainable wood? 24Jun 04, 2012 10:38 pm Chuq, we have modwood on sustainable house. It's horribly hot on bare feet in summer. And it's still plastic - not degradable and I'm not aware of any options for reuse at end of its life. It was the best and most affordable product on the market at the time, and I liked the idea of creating a market for recycled plastic. But I wouldn't use it again. I believe our builders now use a bamboo product. Re: Decking using sustainable wood? 25Jun 05, 2012 12:17 pm Have you looked at Radial Timber sales in Dandenong? http://www.radialtimbers.com.au/ Our front porch deck is made out of their Silvertop Ash product and looks great. Their mission statement says: "Radial Timber is committed to the sustainable sourcing, milling and sale of Victorian hardwoods, sourced only from plantation or temperate regrowth forests. We believe that old growth and rainforest timber should be preserved for future generations. It is company policy to plant 4 new trees for every single log we process." Re: Decking using sustainable wood? 26Jun 06, 2012 4:32 pm I don't suppose anyone knows of a reputable timber yard in SE Qld (Gold Coast)? We want to deck our back verandah in either spotted gum or grey ironbark and are having a bit of a problem finding someone. "Whoever says sunshine brings happiness has never danced in the rain!" Hi, as per the subject. Does anyone have any recommendations for the best value decking oil (Bunning is close to where I live) for a treated pine deck?
