Browse Forums Eco Living 1 Jun 01, 2011 11:32 pm I'm trying to think of ways to make our house more efficient and its really obvious the laundry is a problem. For the window we got the options of replacing with double glazing or adding one of those magnetic double glazing inserts. The door prolly should be solid but I think its hollow core so I suppose all we can do is replace that. So that leaves the manhole, is it possible to insulate it or doesn't it cause much heat loss so no need to do anything? Thanks for any opinions on this. Re: Worth insulating ceiling manhole? 2Jun 02, 2011 6:43 am I've insulated the manhole why leave a big 'hole in your insulation. Easy to do just glue some deep timbers to the top side of the existing cover, fill the space with a bit of an insulating bat, or in my case leftover polystyrene from a TV we bought, then glue and tack a piece of light ply on the top. Re: Worth insulating ceiling manhole? 3Jun 02, 2011 3:03 pm Personally I cant see the point of insulating it unless it is an area that has heating and you are getting neurotic about heat loss. Most manholes are in the hallway and (in my home) is cooler because the return air vent for the A/C is located there Arfur Re: Worth insulating ceiling manhole? 4Jun 02, 2011 3:14 pm probably more important to make sure there are no drafts coming from a man whole that doesn't seal properly. You dont want the air being sucked into the house by the heaters return air. Re: Worth insulating ceiling manhole? 5Jun 05, 2011 11:33 pm Thank you. The return air isn't near the manhole. I think the outside door and the window are the bigger problem but it sounds like its easy enough to DIY the manhole cover. Ta for the description bashworth. Re: Worth insulating ceiling manhole? 6Jun 12, 2011 6:45 pm 1m2 of uninsulated ceiling loses as much heat as 10m2 of insulated ceiling. Re: Worth insulating ceiling manhole? 7Sep 22, 2011 9:25 pm I would say yes. I used a non contact digital thermometer to check our house during winter with the heating set at 20 degrees C. When checking ceiling it was ranging around 17 to 18 degrees. I check over the manhole and it only measured 15 degrees. Magee You might be able to apply to divert the sewer at your expense.
