Browse Forums Eco Living 1 May 24, 2011 8:52 pm We're building in an area where heating is more important that cooling. Friends nearby (Wallan Vic, just south of the divide)said that they used their AC 6 days last summer and their house is poorly insulated. They said to put much more thought into heating than cooling. So the question of roof colour came up again. I was planning on a light coloured roof but in an area that is generally colder would a dark coloured roof actually be beneficial? Re: Dark coloured roof 2May 24, 2011 8:58 pm I would probably say yes. I'm also in Wallan, and to add to what your friend said, we don't even have any cooling! Only freestanding fans at the moment and we have not missed having no cooling one bit. The cold... that's a whole different story. It is freeeeezing up here! We checked out the temps from all the Melbourne region weather stations, and the one for up here (on Pretty Sally I think) is generally a few degrees cooler than Melbourne. Lovely in Summer to be a bit cooler, but in Winter! I wouldn't be worried about having a lighter coloured roof up here to be honest. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. This goes double for winter. Therefore a dark roof will not make much difference to your heating bill in winter.
