Browse Forums Eco Living 1 Oct 03, 2010 8:26 pm My little girls room is a tiny little thing with a window facing North, upstairs in a double story house. When I say her room is tiny, picture this: go to the carpet store to re-carpet her room, give the dimensions to the guy and he shows us..... rugs. Thats right, the thought we were buying a rug and not actually carpeting a room Here is a pic which shows the size and window (excuse the mess, this was during the pregnancy stage where it was just storing baby related things Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Window now has a thick block out curtain. House has NO insulation in the walls. Has new insulation in the ceiling (very minor improvement) What can I do in regards to heat?? Im very worried for Summer - I practically died last summer Today was 22degrees and her room sat at 24 for most of the day, and is at 23 at 9.30pm, with her window open all day (otherwise extremely stuffy) and her door open when she is not asleep (can not be open when she is asleep due to three little mutts and three other annoying people) What can I do? Which doesnt cost a fortune as i just want to get out of this place Im considering taping foil to her window Custom European Cabinets - Melbourne Kitchen Specialist PM for business details as website currently being updated! Our Crazy Owner Builder Journey! What can I do with her room?? 2Oct 03, 2010 8:46 pm Bam can you install a ceiling fan or a small window air conditioner? They are pretty cheap to buy even better if you know of any houses being demo'ed. Ie one of our employees has just come and taken out the two "window rattlers" from our front house for his preg daughter's granny flat. They only plug into a power point so the only handiwork needed is to install them in a window / wall opening. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: What can I do with her room?? 3Oct 03, 2010 8:53 pm I dont think the window aircon would work, as it would then mean I couldnt open the actual window right? It can be quite a smelly baby room at times so I definately need to be able to air it out Hadnt thought about a ceiling fan... would having a fan directly over her cause any problems?? Re: What can I do with her room?? 5Oct 03, 2010 10:52 pm Trish Can't you move her to a different room (thinking double story house - must have other rooms If not canvas blinds outside the window to reduce the heat? I second the "blinds outside" idea. Canvas or those old cane/bamboo ones (I think it's cane or bamboo anyway - the ones that have the drawstring to make the roll up). Something that hangs from the eves and ensures that the sun doesn't hit the external walls. If the outside wall is brick, then this will make a big difference as the bricks are less likely to absorb the heat of the day. If there is any western wall to her room, then use the blinds on that as the afternoon sun is the hottest. Other than that, I'd say a pedastool fan is a good idea simply to get the air moving. I know some people who lived in our student accomodation used to open the window and point the fan out to draw cooler air from other parts of the flat into their room, while expelling the hot air at the same time. Not sure it worked, but it could be worth a try Re: What can I do with her room?? 6Oct 04, 2010 8:03 am Quote: Can't you move her to a different room (thinking double story house - must have other rooms Not neccesarily - many 2 story townhouses here only have 2 bedrooms. Anyway, Bam, I cant see any problem with a baby haveing a ceiling fan. Re: What can I do with her room?? 8Oct 04, 2010 8:46 am Trish Can't you move her to a different room (thinking double story house - must have other rooms If not canvas blinds outside the window to reduce the heat? Nope, all 5 rooms are taken. This was actually the junk room, so we're lucky we had anywhere at all. Our build was supposed to have finished before she was born, but due our idiot designer we didnt get to start to after she was born so we're house sharing still. The way the house is designed, there isnt access to the outside of the window. That part of the house is tepped in from the lower story if you get what I mean? You cant even see the window standing in the backyard. So I wouldnt have anyway of opening it or closing an external blind Trish Other than that, I'd say a pedastool fan is a good idea simply to get the air moving. Im going to look in to the ceiling fan idea a bit more, seems to be the best option at the moment Her room was still 23degrees at 1am. At 7am this morning it was 21degrees Custom European Cabinets - Melbourne Kitchen Specialist PM for business details as website currently being updated! Our Crazy Owner Builder Journey! Re: What can I do with her room?? 10Oct 04, 2010 9:25 am Bam, would there be any chance of situating the gorgeous E in your room? If you could move out say a dressing table or your clothing drawers or desk or wardrobe or something into that room (and making it a 'dressing room', as it is only temporary) making room for her in your room. I know this is not ideal but it will hopefully not be for too long. Just a thought. Otherwise, perhaps you could situate the pedestal fan outside the door of the room to gently blow in the room rather than have it blowing air onto her directly. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: What can I do with her room?? 11Oct 04, 2010 9:27 am Dumb designer...how dare he keep such a gorgeous girl waiting for her own room so long. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: What can I do with her room?? 12Oct 04, 2010 9:30 am Trish Bummer At least you won't have a problem with the kitchen people! The room is only 3x3 unfortunately ( I have to bunny hop out of the bed as its against the wall ). And now she's too big for her bassinette And this room is probably worse than her room as it has no ceiling insulation (apparently due to the pitch of the roof the couldnt put any in) but I guess we could atleast have a fan then I might get hubby to measure up the cot tonight and see if it would fit Custom European Cabinets - Melbourne Kitchen Specialist PM for business details as website currently being updated! Re: What can I do with her room?? 14Oct 04, 2010 9:40 am Another option might be one of those portable air conditioners (or water coolers) on wheels that you just plug into a power point? What about window tinting film? Would that help to keep the heat out a bit? (and probably looks marginally better than foil ) Re: What can I do with her room?? 16Oct 04, 2010 9:53 am grom40 Another option might be one of those portable air conditioners (or water coolers) on wheels that you just plug into a power point? And you can buy DIY tint from bunnings too Im sure. You know what, Ill do it just because I can. Doesnt matter if it doesnt work There wouldnt be room for a portable air con unfortunately Trish When do you estimate moving in? As soon as hubby finishes Im hoping I can use the April school holidays to move as a worst case scenario... but Im hoping hubby works faster than that Custom European Cabinets - Melbourne Kitchen Specialist PM for business details as website currently being updated! Re: What can I do with her room?? 18Oct 04, 2010 10:04 am You can get some canvas outside blinds which allow you to open them from the inside...the cord is through a hole drilled in under the window latch and you can pull it - my mum has one at her place as one of the windows are inaccessible. You can do this on top of the tinting. Also consider some roll down holland blinds which are better at keeping the sun out. I have them under our curtains for our west facing rooms and they are fantastic. Also, saw in a retravision catalogue some clever portable small air conditioners..I'll see if I can find the link for you.
