Re: What can I do with her room?? 22Oct 04, 2010 8:26 pm mpcj You can get some canvas outside blinds which allow you to open them from the inside...the cord is through a hole drilled in under the window latch and you can pull it - my mum has one at her place as one of the windows are inaccessible. You can do this on top of the tinting. Also consider some roll down holland blinds which are better at keeping the sun out. I have them under our curtains for our west facing rooms and they are fantastic. Also, saw in a retravision catalogue some clever portable small air conditioners..I'll see if I can find the link for you. We saw those at HN but damn they were expensive Ill see what I can find on those canvas blinds, could be a great option! donuts I agree with the ceiling fan idea. we had/have them for both our kids' rooms since birth, they have been great. just monitor the temperature in there to make sure it doesn't get too cold esp at night. I tend to turn mine off just before we go to bed. We have our monitor set up in the range of 17-23 so the alarm goes off if above or below. Will definately have to change this for summer! nattygee Could you plug in a pedestal fan in the doorway then move it when she is up? And are there any other windows open in the house? A single window open doesn't do much as any breeze passing by has nowhere to go (or nowhere to suck from) if there's no other way for air to get in or out of the space. If you can find a way to get air flowing through the room by opening a window somewhere in the house else than that may work better. If you don't want outside air coming through the rest of the house (assuming it's cooler) then maybe an exhaust fan with an open window would work, drawing air in through the window. I second the suggestions of external shading. Failing that you might consider one of those metallised plastic (e.g. mylar) window films or blinds (google). Also, don't knock your original idea of taping foil on the window! My wife actually resorted to sticking cardboard boxes (folded flat) behind all north and west facing venetian blinds at our last place (rental). It made a HUGE difference in summer. "Now, supposing a house to have a southern aspect, sunshine during winter will steal in under the verandah, but in summer, when the sun traverses a path right over our heads, the roof will afford an agreeable shade, will it not?" -- Socrates, ca. 400 BC Re: What can I do with her room?? 25Oct 05, 2010 6:14 pm Her bedroom door is open when the window is open, as is other bedroom doors and windows but now you have me thinking... Im going to open the slider to the balcony now too as its about 7 meters opposite her door. Thanks for that! I like the cardboard box idea! Re: What can I do with her room?? 26Oct 05, 2010 8:45 pm If sun onto the Northern window is the problem (no eaves?) then you could combine the card board sun block idea and your foil idea by sticking aluminium cooking foil to the cardboard box cardboard with aerosol spray glue. Put the foil on both sides - foil on the back will limited heat emitted from the rear as well as the foil on the front reflecting the heat. (With velcro type sticking points should be able to be removed and replaced quickly.) To extend the idea even further could consider using polystyrene sheet instead of the cardboard again with cooking aluminium foil glued to both sides. Cheap temporary option - but does block the light. (External shading is still probably better if this is achievable.) (There are holland type blinds available made from foil laminate (similar to builders foil) that reflect the heat.) But all of this assumes the main heat source for the room is from the window. It may be just one of many heat sources so the problem may still not be solved. Re: What can I do with her room?? 27Oct 13, 2010 8:24 am What about the outside security shutters? They are insulated and can be mechanically operated from inside. There are also exterior blinds which can be mechanically operated from inside or even the option of putting a verandah type awning on the outside over the top of the window. Ceiling fans are great. We don't have air conditioning so have one in every bedroom, 2 in the family room and 2 in the lounge / dining. We have a simple white ceiling fan with the light incorporated into it (to save clutter on the ceiling) with white ceilings so the fan's don't stand out. Blinds with heavy blockout curtains over the top on the inside help heaps too. Those whirlybirds on the roof remove a lot of heat out of the roof. Good roof insulation and you can also get wall insulation. You can also get a small, older fashioned air conditioner which would cool a room that size and allow the window to be open.
