I can't believe I have only just noticed this - on the plans from our architect (which I have looked in detail at repeatedly for the last 8 months) the compass in the block at the bottom has some annotations of "summer" and "winter" on it. A bit hard to read on the full size plans, but here is a close-up!

Obviously these are sun path indicators of some sort - I'm guessing the points where the lines meet the circle indicate the sunrise and sunset locations at the summer and winter solstice. I'm not sure what the lines themselves represent as the "actual" sun path would be a curved line. I'll ask my architect next time I see him, but anyone else have any idea?
