From what I understand you are only eligible for the rebate if you are replacing an electric system or certain gas ones. ~ trying to build our dream home by the sea ~ Re: Solar hot water system 3Aug 10, 2010 8:01 pm Depends on the area you're in. Pretty sure the rebate is offered on any SHWS, regardless of whether it's a new build. Best to ring your local council or the state government Re: Solar hot water system 5Aug 10, 2010 8:07 pm cksoon The builder told me will definately get the rebate but builder will take it not me. Is the builder do the right thing? Big builders can sting you. Supposedly with our build, our builder took the price of the rebate off the unit, and they claimed the rebate themselves. I'm not sure whether I believe that or if they just pocketed the money without passing the saving onto us in the over cost of things. But what your builder is telling you is what happened to us. Re: Solar hot water system 6Aug 11, 2010 1:04 pm There are a couple of different payments you can receive if you go for solar hot water. One is the value of the RECs (Renewable Energy Certificates). These are a tradeable certificate as part of the MRET (Mandatory Renewable Energy Targets, see orer.gov.au) and it operates like the abandoned CPRS would have. The number of certificates varies from system to system and even geographical location and the prices paid for certificates fluctuates like share prices. This is not actually a 'rebate'. Some businesses will reduce the initial cost of their products by an agreed value for the RECs as long as you promise to sign them over. The official rebates only apply if you are replacing an electric storage hot water system with solar or a heat pump. You get a federal rebate of $1000 for solar and $600 for a heat pump (must earn over 20 RECs) and this money is deposited directly into your bank account and can't be signed over to the supplier. The rebate for replacing an electric system doesn't apply if you have already benefited from the disbanded roof insulation rebates. There are also state rebates in NSW and QLD for replacing electric which also can not be signed over. Victoria will also let you generate VEECs (Victorian Energy Efficiency Certificates) if you are replacing an electric system. These are very similar to RECs and again the value changes with system and location.
