In Sydney and our house faces east west lenght ways with the main bedroom on the west side and the living space on the east. To the north is a house with trees that shade part of the house in winter. We have our lounge opening to the East with 5m of bifold doors and a 2m kitchen window in the east too. I was thinking of putting up a pergola, shade cloth or polycarbonate roofing up on at least part of the 4m wide east facing deck. I don't want excessive heating in summer nor want to cut too much light to the loungroom in winter. How concerned should I be regarding Excessive glazing on the Eastern wall? Ta. You may not notice much of a problem at the beginning of the cooling part of the day. However, the additional radiant heat load might up being stored in the building fabric and furnishings. This will still need to be shed for the following day. It will also put an extra burden on your cooling systems as the day wears on. It is better to use vertical shading structures on the east and west. It is difficult to get the right balance of winter sun and summer shading with horizontal structures in these orientations. Alternatively erect a pergola with deciduous vegetation that will die back in winter to allow the sun in. If you find that there is excessive summer sun early in the day, you can always supplement it with some drop down blinds at the far end, if that makes sense.
