Re: Blogging about building our 9 star house 3Jun 21, 2010 10:24 am Good luck with the project. I am interested in how it would be living in a 9 star house. I have a couple questions, what program was used in determining the 9.1 star rating? and were you involved with your energy rater in the design process or did you just design the house and it happen to get 9.1 stars. Re: Blogging about building our 9 star house 4Jun 21, 2010 12:05 pm Thanks Lowau. Quick reply - I'm supposed to be working (but house stuff is much more interesting right now!). The same people did our design and energy rating, which meant we were able to have a lot more control over the process of choosing what design modifications would have the most benefit for the least cost. We did the basic design together and then Jeremy went away and ran it through the software and came back with a list of modifications, their probably cost and their probable effect on our rating. We looked over this list and made some cost benefit decisions - for example, yes to reverse brick veneer on the north and west sides, no to an elevated concrete slab for upstairs! In one of my next blogs, I thought I'd post the list - will get to it soon, I promise. Later, we made one or two small decisions that helped tip us into 9 stars - for example, low E glass for an extra $2000. I'm not sure we would have spent that money if it didn't make the star difference. When we knew we were close to 9, we decided to go the extra yards (even before I found out how rare it is to have 9 stars). From the certificate, I think the software is called AccuRate. Cheers e.
