We are hoping to build in Perth, the block we have chosen faces North. Would it be best for the living areas and pool to be on the east or west side taking into consideration the hot afternoon sun in summer and the cooler winters? Re: Which is the best way for a house to face in Perth 2May 01, 2010 2:50 pm Tricky one. Ideally North - Living areas South - Sleeping quarters West - Utility rooms, laundry, wet areas Current plan (pros/cons) - morning sun to family/kitchen for breakfast - dark bedrooms in morning - overheated bedrooms / activity/ office Flipped plan (pros/cons) - morning sun to bedrooms - lack of daytime light to office and activity - some afternoon sun to family/kitchen (may overheat in summer) - garage will shield some of the afternoon sum Either way the living areas won't get a lot of light as the day progresses and may get a little cold in winter. Whatever you do you may need some western faced blinds to prevent overheating in summer. I would consider double glazing + curtains to the living areas because of its predominant south facing windows Re: Which is the best way for a house to face in Perth 3May 01, 2010 5:11 pm Hi Dymonite, thanks for your info, our existing home has north facing living rooms and it is really good. The blocks in our area are really scarce and the new development has mostly north/south facing block Double glazing is a great idea! Thanks Re: Which is the best way for a house to face in Perth 4May 01, 2010 9:35 pm Can you find a plan that put the living area near the front of the house and the bedroom down the back? Re: Which is the best way for a house to face in Perth 5May 02, 2010 10:19 am as for having living areas on the west side. We had an L shaped patio on the west and north side of the house and our main living areas in this area of the house last time we built. Kitchen faced west When we used the west side patio area there was some glare in the afternoons but being near the coast when the sea breeze came in it cooled those areas which was wonderful. having the patio area there made all the difference. His was the hottest room in the house. Not a great spot for a bedroom. This photo was taken at the same time as the last one. You can see how shaded the south/front side of the house is. Kexkek, that was really helpful, thanks for the pics!
