Browse Forums Eco Living 1 Sep 17, 2007 10:08 am In brisbane we are at an all time low in our dams so water is like gold (you know the 4 min shower timer we all got) and I for one do all I can to help this but as we are designing our new house I come up with the idea of a 45,000 litre undergound water tank that will feed my whole house and if it does get to empty (and lets face it it will at the moment) the pump swaps over to mains water and as soon as it rains it turns back over . Sounds good but I have been told that the plumbing on the house will not be signed off on if the tank is hooked to the whole house it can only be hooked to outside taps cold water in laundry and toilets (in fact it has to be hooked to them you must have at least a 5.000lt tank in brisbane when building) the reason behind it is that I live in a built up area so smog would get caught in the rain as it fell and then into my tank so it would be unsuitable for drinking!!! This is even though I live within 1km to north pine dam so we now have a 10,000lt tank above ground and am spending the saved money to go towards solar I really think that while there is a metre out the front of my house they want me PAYING for water off THEM!!!
Re: hypocrite government 2Sep 17, 2007 10:26 am Can you clarify..
Are you saying you want your water tank hooked up to all your plumbing for drinking purposes? Re: hypocrite government 4Sep 17, 2007 11:36 am Al You know birds crap on your roof as well as the rain falling on it. I don't think I'd like to be drinking or cooking with it. You know birds crap, and both birds and fish swim in the dams! Re: hypocrite government 5Sep 17, 2007 12:25 pm yes parker I am saying I wanted to hook the whole house to it but not allowed and al do you realise how many houses run on tank water only your parents probally only had tank water in there house when growing up Re: hypocrite government 6Sep 17, 2007 12:43 pm Whales have sex in the ocean??? My mrs grew up on bore and rain water, with natural additives like possum and galah poo etc etc etc.. Apart from marrying me she is nnormal. DONT GO THERE MATT!!!!!! Adrian B Re: hypocrite government 8Sep 17, 2007 7:56 pm bda20,
I think you will find the issue if that the health department doesn't want the potential issues of your rainwater tank causing health problems to residents of your house. Or more so - if you sell it - the new owners !!! re the galah crap etc, yes that happens but you can filter it and treat it to make it safe to drink. As for whale dung - hmm you need a big tank first up _ then I'd suggest lots of big filters There is a house in inner Sydney that went super sustainable and they are pretty much not buying water at all - and they are also not connected to the sewer system, They are within spitting distance of the Sydney CBD and they capture and treat their own BLACK water and GREY water - plus capture the rain water and run the house on these 2 water supplies - so it can be done, but you have to take your time go through lots of hoops before it is all OK by the powers that be. So I'd be doing this - put in the big tank - connect it as the powers that be say - then work through the hoops after you are in and make the house whole house run off it - and achieve your goals. Steve Abook on their house is called "Sustainable House" by Michael Mobbs and is plublished by Choice Books. When I was a little girl….oh so many years ago!!! My grandparents ONLY had water tanks as their only means to water. I know a few people who are still using tanks as there only means to water! I must say….I spent a lot of time at my grandparent’s home on holidays from Sydney, I’m still around! And all this after my grandmother used to filter her tap with a nylon stocking!!!! I was more concerned about the stocking, and which part she was using to filter OUR water!!! We had wrigglers in the water; my brother climbed up to the tanks once and saw dead frogs floating in the water….YUCK…..but we’re all still breathing! So what’s the issue with tanks again??? We have moved on as a species... No wonder we have no antibodies any more. Bring on the water filtered by grandmas stocking with the wrigglers and the dead frogs and the galahs poo... We will all be healthier for it!! I remember when the milk tanker at an uncles arrived at the farm and the driver lifted the lid to find a frog swimming around in the vat. The driver said he wont drink much will he - flicked him out and pumped the milk into his tanker Wouldn't happen today would it??? and that was in QLD too - ahh how times have changed. for the better and the worse. As for the stockings - we used to use new ones Mish Steve Re: hypocrite government 13Sep 18, 2007 12:32 am Al You know birds crap on your roof as well as the rain falling on it.
