I've had a minor shock this morning, after listening to a report on ABC Radio National http://www.abc.net.au/rn/breakfast/stories/2009/2733611.htm.
Apparently at least $5.2 billion worth of food ends up in rubbish bins in Australia each year. The main reasons listed were increasing affluence, smaller families and lack of planning (impulse shopping). It's a really appalling figure, considering the environmental and moral impact of such waste. To put it into perspective, the Australian overseas aid for 2008-2009 was $3.7 billion.
