If impovrished nations drowning in debt & being shafted by
the multinatiionals can't feed their people,
then it is up to the people to feed themselves or starve...
Aquaponics is about bringing food production home. Plain and simple,
just like Dad's veggie garden and chooks, cept now I have fish to eat.
One Artisan,
I cannot criticise your personal choice of employing this form food production. It could be equally argued that I should be criticised for eating red meat because of its disproportionately high ecological footprint.
What I am trying to do is assess the sustainability of a system such as AP. If we were to consider all the existing possible methods of producing edible fish and vegetables, would AP be the most efficient and least wasteful means of transforming these basic resources into the final product.
Imagine that if overnight every family in the world acquired an AP system. Would the net world demand on wild fish stock or any other resource used for food production be increased or decreased?
If all the commercial aquaculture ventures converted to AP what impact would it have on its existing consumption.
If one had purely vegetarian diet then would it make any sense in using fertiliser to grow a soy bean crop to feed a fish whose waste than grows some vegetables. Why not short circuit the process and put the original fertiliser directly on a vege patch? Would you actually achieve a higher yield for the same amount of input.
