Browse Forums Eco Living 1 Jul 15, 2009 11:22 am I wanna build a basic small chook shed and pen either side to rotate chooks into. Probably for no more than 3 or 4 chooks. Does any one have any cool diy jobs they can show me? Or a link to a good design they've seen? Determined to do this on my own, although I have limited tools at present. I seem to always ask my Dad and little bro to help out, but they're in PNG for the next month, so have decided I want to have a go myself. DH is next to useless at anything construction wise. I asked him to put together a basic $40 metal shelving unit from bunnings yesterday and it ended up 2 feet shorter than it was supposed to be, he hid one 'leftover' shelf in the box in the garage along with about a dozen spare bolts and nuts. I sat down and pulled it apart last night and redid it after he had gone to work. Should have done it myself in the first place. But I'm digressing. Chook houses, do you have a nice one? Re: Chook shed 2Jul 15, 2009 11:38 am nope. but i want photos of the completed job and during build stages as I want a chook house too. have to contend with foxes here so they need to be penned up at night. I had considered one of those mobile pens but I think something more permanent would be better. Please take lots of pics when you start. What if it turns out hideous... Re: Chook shed 4Jul 15, 2009 12:15 pm I wish I had photos but this was in my old house and didnt take any of the chook house We dont have chooks in new house as back yard is smaller ( I still think there would be room at side of shed but DH wont let me get them again , cant beat haveing fresh backyard eggs ..... sorry I am digressing Anyway we used an old iron rainwater tank for the roosting house, angle grinded a full height opening and then put iron rails across for the roosts and straw on the floor. The fence formed one side and then built an iron and chicken wire fence around the other sides, used an old fly screen door for the entry and an old cement laundry trough for their water. It was a master piece of recycling if I say so myself and did the job for many years, average of about 12 chooks at a time. Re: Chook shed 5Jul 15, 2009 12:22 pm Yes I want to recycle as much as I can too, as much to keep the cost down as anything, but it has to look reasonably aesthetically pleasing, because it will be fully visible from the living areas. Or I might have to plant or build an attractive screen in front of it. I might have to trawl through the local salvage yard and second hand store to find stuff... Re: Chook shed 6Jul 15, 2009 12:27 pm Dragonfly, if you put the roosting house at the back and the open fenced area at the front where it is the visible part, then grow a strong evergreen creeper on the outside of the fencing - it will get natural fertiliser , we grew a bourganvillea against ours and was covered in bright purple flowers for most of the year Re: Chook shed 7Jul 15, 2009 5:54 pm I got this link from another thread : http://forum.backyardpoultry.com/ Re: Chook shed 11Aug 20, 2009 11:03 pm I'm thinking about using these guys to put a garden together for me... http://www.suburbanfarmer.com.au I haven't had it quoted yet but I really want a few chooks and a vegie garden. (Check out their maintenance service!!) Looks like they are also about to start doing aquaponics so you can use fish to fertilize your vege garden.. then eat them (the fish that is)!! I like the idea of growing your own things, I guess you can eat the fish, the chickens and the vegies... all you need is a cow! *Built with Gemmill Homes in WA* Slab - 1st June 2009 Plate Height - 17th June 2009 Lock Up - 18th August 2009 PCI - 5th October 2009 Hand Over - 15th Oct 2009 https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20844 Re: Chook shed 13Aug 21, 2009 12:34 am Where's Onc? Aquaponics makes him come out of the wood work Check this mob for some of the best aquaponics info you can ever want. http://backyardaquaponics.com/ Two blokes that I can strongly recommend for having veggie gardens and the like done is Ben Mitchell from "Growing free gardens" 0405 534 346 He would be one of Perth's leading experts in this area. The other is John McWilliams of Nirvana Landscapes 0408 455 239. Both are very highly regarded in the industry. Both are also accredited waterwise consultants that really began the whole concept in Perth of building veggie gardens for people. Re: Chook shed 14Aug 22, 2009 3:41 am Thanks Fu. That site is really cool. I don't think I could eat my chickens. I did it once and it was horrible - hormones and whatever else they stuff those poor chickens with that are farmed make them much nicer to eat! *Built with Gemmill Homes in WA* Slab - 1st June 2009 Plate Height - 17th June 2009 Lock Up - 18th August 2009 PCI - 5th October 2009 Hand Over - 15th Oct 2009 https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20844 Re: Chook shed 15Aug 22, 2009 11:23 am Manda Thanks Fu. Oh btw they don't use hormones anymore but I'm sure some places probably use other such stuff I like the lillydale chickens or la Ionica ones 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.' Hormones (and steroids for that matter - another myth you hear spoken of often) in chicken farming hasn't been used since the 50's in this country. Any butcher who has a sign saying "hormone free" are pulling your leg, because they know it is true and are trying to mislead you into thinking others sell chicken with hormones in them. Re: Chook shed 17Aug 22, 2009 5:16 pm Will watch this thread with interest as we will definately be having chooks on the property (for eggs), will need to be fox (and snake) proof though. Also will be having our own veggie patch, herb garden, worm farm, and am looking into a couple of dairy goats for milk and a marron pond (ie. aquaponics). There was an episode on Better Homes & Gardens a couple of weeks ago on being self-sufficient: http://au.lifestyle.yahoo.com/b/better-homes-gardens/12873/episode-28august-14/ As for eating chickens - Mt Barker Free Range - yummo: http://www.mtbarkerchicken.com.au Re: Chook shed 19Aug 22, 2009 9:50 pm Maya_Papaya Also will be having our own veggie patch, herb garden, worm farm, and am looking into a couple of dairy goats for milk and a marron pond (ie. aquaponics).
