Browse Forums Eco Living 1 Nov 15, 2008 8:33 pm Starting to organise our outside and we bought a compost bin. Bought it back in August (it was actually DH's birthday present ) and have lost the instructions in the move to new house.
We have never had a compost bin before; in our old house we had a bigger yard and we had a chicken run and had 'living compost bins' in the form of 12 chooks who got all our scraps and then provided us with ready made fertiliser for garden, as well as eggs..........but I digress. My question is: how do we set up the bin? It has no bottom so I presume the idea is to use the existing ground soil to help decomposition, with a layer of pea straw or such at the bottom, if I remember correctly? Also, do they smell? If possible, I would like to have it in the side yard outside laundry door, where our bins and recycling area is but is this too close to the house? And are there any No-no's regards what can go in it? I know meat products are out, but is everything else organic OK?, ie veg scraps, pasta, crusts of bread, weeds, tea-bags are all fine? Any advice much appreciated. Re: Compost bin questions 3Nov 18, 2008 12:00 am I have a square peice of wire mesh (1cm x 1cm holes) under my compost bins (2 of) to stop rats etc getting in as they are down the back away from the house and close to the vegie garden. Close to the garden means easy emptying once a year.
