Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Sep 19, 2008 11:43 pm Hi,
The electrician has just started pre wiring our house and I'm thinking that I should be putting in some cabling of my own at this stage also for the theatre. I would like to have things really clean and tidy, hence I asked for the following from the electrician. We have a tv recess where we will mount the tv to the wall, because I don't want cables to be seen (single brick), we're having 1 conduit going from the floor cabinet to the ceiling (this is to run my speaker cables to the ceiling from the amp). 2 conduits going from the floor cabinet to behind the tv (this is for all my connections to the back of the tv such as component, hdmi, tv point, optical fibre etc Cabling also installed by our electrician for data and phone for our telstra smart velocity smart wiring. We will also have single powerpoint behind the tv and a dual behind the cabinet. I would like to have a free standing speaker in each corner of the room (double brick cavity). My question for this is does it matter what type of speaker cable I run from my amp into the ceiling and out to the four points? Is the quality as an important factor as it is for things like component video and coaxial? Also does it matter what walls connections I use? I've just seen some standard red black audio plates from bunnings and the connectors for the end of the cables so that I can plug the cables into the plates. I want to make it look smicko Also do I get an 8 gang audio plate for behind the cabinet where the speaker cables will run from amp to wall? Also while I'm runing in the speaker cables, is it worth me pre wiring up things like component / hdmi and having nice wall plates for them, can that be done? is it too much? or too imflexible? Alot of questions I know so thanks in advance Lloyd Lloyd Re: Pre Laying Cabling Questions for Theatre 3Sep 20, 2008 2:00 am Wow they do look nice. A little expensive though I must say
I like the idea of also having a plate behind the tv with hdmi and component, but I'm not sure I'd beable to feed them throught a 35mm conduit, for example the hdmi connector is quite wide, would that fit down a 35 mm conduit, and then surely they'd be no room left for the three component connectors..... Re: Pre Laying Cabling Questions for Theatre 8Sep 23, 2008 2:24 pm they do!
But why would you want to use RCA plugs when there are proper speaker wallplates? Re: Pre Laying Cabling Questions for Theatre 9Sep 23, 2008 3:03 pm probably because I don't have a clue what I'm doing
So would using a wallplate which excepts a banana plug be better than a wallplate that excepts an RCA connection? Although its all new to me, I'd like to learn how to do it all. The wallplates I have left over from bunnings are just rca red and black connections. And at the back of the plates I have to solder the spreaker wire to attach. Would be good if there was a good quality way to attach without soldering aswell. Thats more of a pain to do on site Lloyd Re: Pre Laying Cabling Questions for Theatre 10Sep 23, 2008 5:03 pm These are the go:

How important is the quality of these connections also the quality of the speaker cable? The room dimensions are about 5 by 4 metres. Not sure how good the speaker cable I have is, I was given it, the reel says High Performance Figure 8 O.F.C Speaker Cable, 60/0.12mm W-2013 I was intending to run this stuff through the walls and also make the leads from amp to wall and wall to speakers out of it. Is this good enough? I don't want to destroy the quality of the sound especially if I find a really nice speaker setup Lloyd Re: Pre Laying Cabling Questions for Theatre 12Sep 23, 2008 8:55 pm lloydmav Not sure how good the speaker cable I have is, I was given it, the reel says High Performance Figure 8 O.F.C Speaker Cable, 60/0.12mm W-2013 I was intending to run this stuff through the walls and also make the leads from amp to wall and wall to speakers out of it. It will be fine in the average theatre room!! I'm about to put down some Merbau. Is it necessary to oil underneath the boards before laying? 0 760 Hey There. No problems re jumping in.
