Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Sep 12, 2008 9:43 am I've read the guides available in the net but I'm still a bit wary. so I hope you would help me out with some of my questions.
situation: I will be installing the TV in a plasterboard wall. I just bought a stud finder and I believe I've located 2 vertical wooden frames underneath. I'll drill small holes to confirm. I will be using PLB103b (http://www.selbyacoustics.com.au/storefrontprofiles/deluxesfitemdetail.aspx?sfid=74520&c=84140&i=240723719) I just bought from Selby. My worry is that the wood behind the wall may not be strong enough. I will be installing a 50in plasma and according to the box, it's about 45Kg. since there are only 2 wooden frames, I drilling 4 holes, 2 on each side. 1. any suggestions on making sure the studs will hold? I've read suggestion on this forum that I need to brace it. Can someone please explain further what is required to "brace" the wall? 2. Can I use any type of bolt/screw that's long enough to ensure it's deep within the wood? 3. what if i install a piece of rectangular wood on the wooden frames. Each side of the rectangle will mounted via 4 (or 5) bolts/screws. I would then install the TV mount over it. something like this: http://img149.imageshack.us/my.php?image=32963410xk4.png the plasterboard wall (not shown in the image) is in between frame and the rectangular wood. and the TV mount will be installed on top of the rectangular wood. if viewed sideways, it'll look like this: stud => plasterboard => rectangular wood => TV mount bracket => TV 4. any other suggestions? thank you very much Re: Tips on DIY wall mounting a 50in TV 2Sep 12, 2008 11:14 am The studs are strong enough on their own. Finding them the way you have is right on, and that's all you need to do.
Use the 4 big hex head screws that come with the plasma bracket you bought - they are strong enough also. Pre-drill the holes for the screws to the thickness of the core of those screws - or perhaps just a tiny bit smaller (this will mean some real elbow grease to turn them in...) - so you don't split/crack the studs by forcing such big screws into them (and you'd need something mighty powerful to turn them in). Thank you! Re: Tips on DIY wall mounting a 50in TV 6Sep 12, 2008 2:33 pm I actually compare the thickness of the drill bit to the thickness of the core of the screw visually. Simple as that.
You can start with a hole a little under the size, and if you find you are really fighting hard to get the screw in then take the screw out and re-drill the holes with the next size up drill bit... Update from me! Couldn't find the trimmer - not sure if there isn't one simply because the eave is so narrow. Went ahead with the spring toggles and it all worked out… 7 5860 Hi Would love some advice on a DIY project I've dived into that's now keeping me up at night.
