Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Jun 27, 2018 2:08 pm There are some old threads about this and I think the consensus was no. Now that they have improved the function and safety of these flued gas heated units, is it really safe to place one under the TV without a mantle? and what would be considered a safe distance from the TV from any surrounding custom cabinetry?? We love the look but I don't want to melt the TV. Re: TV mounted above gas fireplace yay or nay? 3Jun 27, 2018 5:03 pm That’s interesting, I’m the opposite, even if there was a tv that could be mounted 1mm from the fireplace I wouldn’t do it, it’s a horrible “look” and one I’d avoid at all costs. So it’s a nay from me. My husband is a plumber (specializes in gas) and my brother who installed all our home theatre equipment and TV’s is an electrician, his company specialises in home theatre and automation. So you can definitely do it, it needs to be installed correctly by professionals... End of day it doesn’t matter what anyone thinks, you’re the one that lives with it everyday so you’ve done what you want. The question was yay or nay. And one of the reasons for my nay is the fact that tvs above fireplaces are too high for optimum viewing and another reason is that they each distract you from the other. Again I’m not arguing or saying it’s wrong, I’m saying I personally wouldn’t do it. You say you’re building again and would do the same. Might just be how you’ve worded it but does that mean you are going to do it the same or still deciding? My brother didn’t like the height of the TV however it hasn’t impacted us at all, I’m not sure if having 11ft ceilings makes a difference but the height feels normal to us, in saying that our bedroom currently has a TV at ‘optimum’ height and we feel it’s low😂 In regards to our new build, it’s currenty being designed but we have advised the architect that we would be happy for the TV to be placed above the fireplace again if it’s required (in order to minimise walls and maximise windows/glass). Agree each to their own😊 Re: TV mounted above gas fireplace yay or nay? 9Jul 06, 2018 9:14 am We have an Escea DL1100 fireplace. Got it installed with powerflue, and concrete sheeting (I think) fireproof board around it. We followed the Escea instructions to the letter, saying how high above the TV needed to be. Now that it is installed, we're quite happy. The area above the fireplace only gets really mildly warm. You can easily rest your hand there. The fans in our unit are good enough, and are pushing the majority of the heat into the room, so our TV wouldn't be much above room temperature (maybe 26/27 degrees) which iis cooler than the TV experiences in summer (30+ degrees). Having said that maybe TV's don't like being cycled from cold (heater off) to warm (heater on) many times during winter. Anyway, we're a fan (pun intended) of the Escea heater we got. Not a fan of the price (!). It pushes heat away from the wall nicely.. HTH.. Re: TV mounted above gas fireplace yay or nay? 10Jul 06, 2018 11:49 pm sxwallac We have an Escea DL1100 fireplace. Re: TV mounted above gas fireplace yay or nay? 11Jul 07, 2018 12:03 am TVs will survive above the fireplace. However Tv's should be mounted at eye level when you're sitting down rather than you looking up. If the height doesn't bother you, go for it. Re: TV mounted above gas fireplace yay or nay? 12Oct 15, 2018 11:21 pm Generally not an issue with heat, the brick wall won't conduct the heat and as most heat is radiated, the TV again will not receive this heat directly. So long as all wiring and cabling rules are followed in terms of cabling to that TV, it can be done safely. In terms of looks, some people find the fireplace is distracting as nearby. Optimal TV height is where your eye level while sitting down is exactly 1/3rd of the way up the TV height. For a 75inch TV this means the bottom of the TV needs to be about 80cm off the ground.
