Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 May 29, 2020 10:51 am I've never had a home theatre room in my homes nor used a projector type arrangement but now am about to start building a new house and decided on a dedicated theatre room. Initially planned to have a large TV in it but the more I read, the more I realise that if I want it to be a "true" home theatre, and not just another TV room, projector is the way to go. For this reason, need to some advice from you guys on which wall would I be better off putting my screen on. The TV was going on wall A but that limits the size of the projector screen (based on recommended viewing distance) to under 90". Not sure if this is small or not, but given the size of the room, I wonder if it's a better idea to put the screen on wall B? Also, what wiring/conduit do you recommend I ask the builder to run to enable future installation? Lastly, I noticed quite a few home theatre rooms have the dropped bulkhead around the ceiling perimeter. Is that a functional thing, or more of a design thing? Do people have the ceiling speakers installed there? Trying to understand the benefits of having that? Thanks all in advance! However, I will suggest that you avoid ceiling speakers. Very rare that sound naturally comes from over your head, and if listening to music, no artist ever intended for their music to be listened to that way. So I suggest you are better off with wall or stand mounted speakers. Re: Which wall would you put the home theatre screen on? 4May 29, 2020 5:00 pm I've got a very similar room to yours...We have the screen on wall B and we'll have block out curtains with sheers on the window. We pre-wired for ceiling speakers and as I understand even if there's no sound "dubbed" for ceiling, good amplifiers just pass the surround into the ceilings when you set it up and you'll get an "immersive" experience. We also have a step in there for the back chairs if you need it. Our setup is 3 speakers front (2 front and 1 centre), 2 side and 2 back. Then four ceiling (but we'll only start using 2). Speaker placement is important so if you go this route I can send you a link I used and our sketch plan. With regards to projection, best to look at the projector you want, then get the manual as they usually have projection distances for different screen sizes. We had all the speaker wire go to the front, hdmi from front to projector ceiling point, two ethernet cables from front to projector point to future proof (4k, 8k, etc), and power on the ceiling. It's all possibly overkill but we were lucky our builder allowed us to do this ourselves so we went crazy and saved a lot. Do you have a sketch with your room and speaker position at all? The more I read, the more I get confused, I also wanted Wall B for the screen, but now am reading that based on my room shape, Wall A is a better option... go figure... Our supervisor let us in over the weekend to wire it up. We had mentioned this to him at the start and he didn't mind, he just asked us to remind him after electrical rough in. Basically we are building a fake wall at Wall B, putting 3 speakers in that wall, putting the screen over the speakers so the sound comes through the screen. Ideally we would have liked to not have a bulkhead however our builder would not allow us to use conduit. This is a massive pain when trying to replace the HDMI in the future (and you will replace it as they break and also become obsolete, so what we are doing is running the HDMI, power and data cable in the bulkhead down to the front fake wall connecting to the equipment in there. So it's more of a functional thing than aesthetics. Speaker wise apart from the 3 upfront we are also having 2 beside the couch, 2 behind the couch, 2 in the ceiling in front of the couch and 2 in the ceiling behind the couch, plus 1 subwoofer so a 7.1.4 system. Should be nuts, can't wait. The last thing I would buy would be the screen, as the size of the screen is determined by the size that your projector can output and also where your seating position is. We worked on a 130 inch screen although our space could of allowed bigger but that would mean putting the projector in a different room and shining it through the wall which was not an option.
