After a lot of experimentation I have ALMOST perfected a way to build a nice projector screen for $50...yes $50. Here's parts to buy... - Foamboard 1220x2440x5mm $25 - Dulux paint (here's where the experiments are still on going) It cost me about $7 for 250ml of paint to experiment but i believe it will cost about $14 in total to get 2 coats on. - Skirting boards for frame $11 Anyhow the secret of the paint is to get the right color, i've chosen a grey color that closely represent some of the higher end screen's. I have their RGB numbers so i am researching with my painter to find the closest paint mixture to get the right mixture of paint. So far my screen looks awesome b/c of the grey color the blacks are deep blacks which makes the picture looks really good, also the grey screen allows some ambient light without ruining the picture. THE PROBLEM Right now my challenge is to get the right shade of grey as i'm not 100% happy yet b/c i think my colors are not as vibrant as they were on a white screen. I am trying to tweak the color temp on the projector but also trying to find the right shade of grey that gives me both benefits. NEXT STEPS Right now i'm going to put a coat of poly eurothane on the screen to give it a little more reflective gain and will report back to let you know how i go. ARE YOU INTERESTED? PM me or post here if you are interested in participating in the experiment. I think the solution is near but its always nice to have someone play around with this and help me find the ideal shade of grey. Any comments, suggestions would be appreciated. smeags. As soon as i paint the frames black i'll post it up...trying to get some time this weekend..between work, 2 kids and building a new house doesn't leave me much time to play around with my toys.... Re: 110inch projector screen for $50 anyone interested? 5Apr 23, 2009 12:16 am I would presume application is very important too, too many peaks and valleys would affect the picture quality. Having a grey screen would mean whites are off though? Perhaps if its very light grey you might be fine (as reflection from the bright projector would help). Re: 110inch projector screen for $50 anyone interested? 6Apr 23, 2009 10:43 am Hey Smeags. Can you tell us how much time the project has taken? Re: 110inch projector screen for $50 anyone interested? 7Apr 23, 2009 10:56 am smeagol! Go you .... good on you for having a go! I would definatley not use grey paint though ... Grey was used to improve upon projectors with low contrast issues but is not necessary these days (given the massive improvements in this area over the last couple of years), and will unduly affect the picture. A matt white paint (or satin) will give you a close to 1:1 gain and the colours will be represented a lot more accuratley. Re: 110inch projector screen for $50 anyone interested? 8Apr 23, 2009 2:54 pm better idea, lose the foamboard and get some gatorboard. much better rigidity as it has the foam wedged between wood fibre veneer on the outside. Foamcore starts to flex too much when temperature and humidity fluctuates in the room. may push the $50 bargain screen to $75 though. Another good one is 1220x2440x6mm foam PVC. Not as light as the foam gatorboard or foamcore though http://www.mulford.com.au//ProductIndex/Foam%20Substrates/Palram%20Palight%20PVC%20Foam.htm Built 36sq Plantation "Retreat" on 4460m2 at Spring Mountain, Qld In Living and landscaping.. >>> ... http://retreatspring.blogspot.com You have no photo with your post.
