Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Aug 17, 2008 11:27 am Hi
I am in the process of signing up my life for a new house. We want to convert the rumpus room into HT room Being technologically illiterate, i seek your expert advise on the cabling and components needed to create a HT room. I am planning to buy a Sharp or Epson Projector and want to portray the image on a motorised projector screen. When i went for my electricals appointment, i got the following cabling added for the HT Room 1) Projector cables - RGB component, composite, Cat5 & GPO 2) Projector High speed HDMI cable (Note 0 use only if amplifier has upscaling ability, or HDMI signal inpyut into amp) They also offer: Pre wire 5.1 or 7.1 Home theater speaker points including subwoofer cable & GPO now the above cabling offered by them is french for me. I need the advise as to whether these cablings (1 & 2) is enough, if i use wireless speakers or is it better to take 3 item as well. Is the output any bad with wireless speakers. I know i will have to attach DVD player to the whole set up as well, so do i need a separate amplifier at all. As cabling item 2 as mentioned above needs to be used with amplifier. Please advise if i can cancel or add any of the above cablings to set up a decent HT Room. Re: Future Home Theater Room. Please Help!!! 2Aug 17, 2008 12:57 pm I would get all three. Wireless audio is mostly garbage.
item one, (RGB component, composite, Cat5) are more optional than anything else that is listed there. Although I'm not sure I'd get rid of component. Composite is probably never going to be used and I'm not sure you'll need a network point (Cat5) for the projector. I would advise against a motorised screen unless you NEED it. Motorised screens warp and ripple and are more expensive, and can break. I have one now and am moving to a fixed screen when i move into the new house. Its cheaper, and is always completely flat as it is under tension. you will need an amp to drive the speakers, although you don't need an amp to use HDMI. Re: Future Home Theater Room. Please Help!!! 3Aug 17, 2008 2:58 pm So, does that mean that i will have to have an amplifier as well to set up HT room? Do i require another sort of cabling to be done for amplifier or not? Re: Future Home Theater Room. Please Help!!! 5Aug 17, 2008 4:45 pm Another dunb question....so is it the subwoofer cabling mentioned in item 3 that will be used to cable amplifier. Please pardon my ignorance Re: Future Home Theater Room. Please Help!!! 7Aug 18, 2008 11:03 am Hi guys, sorry I've been absent over the weekend - had PC issues and ankle issues!
Fundamental requirements for a basic entry-level home cinema's audio and video in 2008 are, : 1. A/V Receiver - either 5.1 or 7.1 The A/V Receiver is the central hub to 'Input' signals from your sources (DVD Player, Set-Top-Box, etc.) and to 'Output' audio and video signals to your video display (Plasma/LCD, Projector) and your speakers, including the subwoofer. They include built-in amplifiers for all of your speakers (hence why some people simply refer to them as amps). 2. Display - Plasma or LCD panel, or a Projector (if you get a projector it is always recommended to get a screen for it to project onto). 3. Speakers - either 5.1 or 7.1. 5.1 = 5 speakers (Front Left, Front Right, Front Centre, Left Surround & Right Surround) that are each driven by separate amplifiers built into the A/V Receiver (these are all 'passive' speakers meaning they don't have amplifiers built into them), plus a subwoofer that actually has it's own amplifier built into itself ('active'). 7.1 = 5.1 + an extra pair of Rear Centre speakers. 4. Cabling - speaker:- You need speaker cables to run from the A/V Receiver to each of the 5 or 7 passive speakers. You need a single (mono) audio lead to run from the A/V Receiver to the subwoofer. 5. Cabling - video:- You need video cables to run from the A/V Receiver to your display device. These (from worst to best) can be anything from the lowly Composite Video or CVBS, to S-Video, Component Video up to HDMI. It depends on what video connection options your display, A/V Receiver and sources give you (this can start to get complicated - you need to know your equipment and what features etc, they have). RGB can sometimes be referring to VGA or a computer video/monitor signal cable. These days, you're mad if you don't run HDMI, but depending on your gear you may still need to cater for the older video formats as well. 6. Sources - DVD Players, Blu-Ray Disc Players, Set-Top-Boxes - you know what they do. They need to connect to the 'Inputs' of, and therefore send all of their audio and video to the A/V Receiver for processing and distribution. If I've missed something I apologise, bit groggy from the meds... Re: Future Home Theater Room. Please Help!!! 8Aug 18, 2008 11:58 am Rodda If I've missed something I apologise, bit groggy from the meds... An IR repeater would be handy if you are going to have a projector above or behind the seating position(s) All the best with the ankle BTW Re: Future Home Theater Room. Please Help!!! 9Aug 18, 2008 7:34 pm Thanks Duminda.
If the projector has an IR receiver in the front and it's not covered then you should be OK without an IR repeating system for it - the IR signals bounce off the screen perfectly (at least at my place they do). Re: Future Home Theater Room. Please Help!!! 10Aug 18, 2008 10:51 pm Thanks Rodd
Just another question? can i use ps3 as an input for amps or do i need to buy a separate dvd or blue ray player. Re: Future Home Theater Room. Please Help!!! 11Aug 18, 2008 11:09 pm homeishome Thanks Rodd Just another question? can i use ps3 as an input for amps or do i need to buy a separate dvd or blue ray player. Hi Homeishome, The Ps3 is a game machine, Blueray player and DVD player in 1 tidy package. You dont need to plug it into an amplifier or receiver, just a TV will do! However in order to get the full cinema experience you need a seperate amplifier and 5 (or 7 ) speakers and a subwoofer. The TV will still provide the picture.
