Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Dec 20, 2016 11:22 am Hello. I have a brand new house just been built ready to move in and got Optus out to connect cable broadband yesterday. Optus technician attend and tell me there is no cabling to allow them to do this and should have been done by the electrician. The electrician from the building company tells me no they never do this and its not part of a standard build. Any thoughts on the above - I have no idea who to push to make this happen? Thanks!! Re: Cable Internet connection on new build 2Dec 20, 2016 11:55 am Optus should install a cable outlet for their modem wherever you ask, within reason; For example, a solid concrete internal wall is probably out of the question. Any additional network cabling to provide cabled internet ports in other rooms is not their responsibility Some people pre-cable their houses during construction since it is easier and cable is cheap (Cable Internet uses standard RG6 Quad coaxial cable; the same that is used for Cable TV and for FTA TV in most cases) but it is not a requirement to do so; If Optus wants you as a customer then they need to connect you to their network, simple as that. Call Optus again. It may have been that the job was listed as a simple activation in their system rather than a new install (Is your house a rebuild in an established area?) Re: Cable Internet connection on new build 3Dec 20, 2016 12:10 pm Thanks for your response - They are saying cabling missing and something about the conduit from our new electricity pole not connected to the house (something along those lines). Yes the house is a rebuild in an established area so I really didn't think this was going to be a problem! thanks so much for the advice ! Re: Cable Internet connection on new build 4Dec 20, 2016 2:06 pm It is your (typically via the builder) responsibility to provide a lead-in conduit for a Telstra connection where the telephone lines are underground. I have always seen Optus cable connections as overhead lead-in from the nearest power pole, so there would be no need for a conduit. Do you have underground power (since you mention a pole, I assume not). Do you have a private power pole? Re: Cable Internet connection on new build 5Dec 20, 2016 2:48 pm Yes we have underground power. The builders installed a pole on our property so the power lines on the road go to the pole which is down the front near our driveway and then I believe from the pole to our house is all underground - so no cables overhead attached to our house! Re: Cable Internet connection on new build 6Dec 20, 2016 3:37 pm Ah, then that is probably the problem. If your house is too far from the street pole for the cable to reach while maintaining sufficient clearance above the ground, then Optus may need to connect to the power pole and you will need to supply a conduit from the pole to your house. This could have/should have been trenched in at the same time as the power was. Do you have a copper telephone line connected? If so then you may be better off sticking with ADSL. The Optus cable network is being decommissioned as part of the NBN rollout anyway, so you will eventually need to move off the Optus cable and on to FTTN NBN. Just out of curosity, how far is it from your private power pole to your house structure? For reference, ours is about 6-7 metres, and we're able to have optus run their cabling overhead 3 48390 Hi all I'm currently building a duplex in Sydney and we need to do a new water connection to the second unit. I guess when you talk to a builder who butters up everything to look very polished, you get to start believing… 7 17602 |
