I wonder if they have a non zwave one (just standard wifi or ethernet connectivity). To date reading HA forums about zwave has made me leery of it's reliability/complexity, where my current wifi device tinkerings have been rock solid (WirelessTag, Wemo, LIFX, etc). I was hoping my favourite sensors maker WirelessTag would have come out with wind sensors, but alas nothing yet. If I was in the USA I'd possibly consider cloud based weather data, however I've found AU ones seriously lacking. The BOM is great for basic stuff, but after that data can get very off/old/aggregated Also I figured if I'm making a HA server anyway, it would be logical to build it to handle a lack of internet (sure ADSL works fine now, but in a new house/new line/when NBN arrives? all bets are off) Re: Home Technology Hub 332Jan 11, 2017 11:04 am Same here, I want to look at some arduino projects, just need to find time... Yeah I'll have to look at HomeAssistant. I've got openHAB 1.8 running great, however from what I can see of openHAB 2 it looks just the same as 1.8 as a UI (quite dated looking), and all I gain switching to it is LIFX automation Re: Home Technology Hub 334Jan 11, 2017 11:09 am benhelps Yeah think I'll have to start seriously looking at some of the arduino projects. We have Amazon echo and Amazon dot in every room in the house. They are amazing at differentiating voice from background noise. Best I've seen. They're integrated through IFTTT recipes. The Maker channel has recently opened up in IFTTT so gluing amazon skills to custom home automation has got heaps easier. A lot of new stuff at the CES show is now Amazon Alexa integrated too. Love the Amazon echos. We're building a new house, and we're electronics nerds, so hopefully we can join in this conversation and mebbe contribute some open source etc.. We also have a custom raspberry PI doing watering, and scraping BOM rain data to adjust watering plans based on rain recorded. As another poster said, this isn't hugely reliable; but is better than nothing. A local rain sensor would be good (or perhaps soil moisture sensor). Cheers, Scott. Re: Home Technology Hub 337Jan 11, 2017 4:21 pm trayracer Would there be enough interest if I start a thread on Roll Your Own HA devices (with RPi/Arduino/ESP etc)? I visit Whirlpool for more technical discussions but I will be very interested if you start a thread here... Nah, it's a fair way of doing things - I've played with IFTTT somewhat myself before opting for a local HA server setup for the home. I just want it to tick along fine if the internet is down, a cloud service is down, etc. For moisture sensors, have a look at http://wirelesstag.net/ (I use them for PIR, motion, temp, dew point, light levels etc too) I still use IFTTT for things like emailing me when it's time for a car service, etc. We already paid for somfy motors for the blinds. The quote above was purely for “pre-wiring” so the blinds company can install the motors and blinds.
