You can use it and switch off z-wave just to use zigbee but that limits your choices of hardware to buy. I'm tossing up between Vera or going full DIY with a rasberry-Pi and homeassistant with a z-wave stick. ... Video/Audio: This is where I don't fully know yet but would love some advice. I am going to get the Harmony Hub to link up all my tv's, recievers, media players controls as that has integration with IFTTT or GH/Amazon natively. This will give me simple voice control of most setups. Usually just off and on though and maybe some volume control or next control. Currently have 2 main TV's with one hooked up to nVidia Shield and the other to the xbox so media centre's covered for both there. Master will probably just get a roku stick or similar. Got my QNap NAS which i'll have to integrate as well. Pre-Wiring: I'm going through the pre-wiring plan at the moment with the builder. Putting in Clipsall switches in the areas i know i want to automate (entry, walkway, library/study, master, lounge, kitchen, dining, theatre) and the rest leave normal. Trying to put data points in most of those rooms as well with CAT6 going into front lounge x 1, master x 2, lounge x 2, theatre x 2 and then hub area point will have 2 as well. I'm getting some advice on this as still a little uncertain of requirements for the setup i want. Trying to think of the power needed for thinks like august door cam, netgear arlo security cameras, blinds etc although I recently found Movez (https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/move ... #/comments) which doesn't need power which could save some money. ... Front door/Entry: Going with August doorbell cam and lock combination over the ring and kwikset. More seamlessly integrated and works with existing deadbolts rather than relying on kwikset's own. Getting a couple of hue bulbs for outside entry and inside entry. Other: Looking at the garagio unit to allow automation for the garage, Rachio for water irregation system, some wemo plugs for other things like coffee machine etc and i'm also looking for something to allow integration for the pool too but still researching those. Anyway any thoughts, questions, ideas would be fantastic. Thanks Jacky My 2c worth from above redacted quote... Door Lock: if you're going down the z-wave route, I'd suggest the Lockwood z-wave deadbolt. I totally love it. On related topic, I got a proper S/IP enabled door bell rather than one that uses proprietary protocol. Cons: expensive, and you need to run your own SIP exchange (eg Asterisk), but gives me more flexibility Vera z-wave controller: It's clunky but does the job. I thought about rolling my own, but the Vera LUUP/LUA scripting was sufficient Garage door: Similarly, look at the Aeon Labs z-wave enable garage door controller CAT cabling: I got 4 runs to home theatre. When you consider the number of media devices that have ethernet: TV, PVR, BD player, PS3. I just wish I had run more CAT (and don't get me started by saying "why don't you use wireless instead"). Also consider running CAT for security cams. I have PoE cams running, and they work really well Wiring: Tip, if you're intending on putting in Saturn or LED Impress switches for z-wave, suggest running an extra cable for two-way switches if you want the switch to illuminate when the lights are off. Re: Home Technology Hub 296Dec 29, 2016 5:06 pm I been waiting for smart hubs for tooo long wink , smartthings i dont think it will happening any time soon. Vera edge release it already sigh ... dont want to stuck with zwave only option although heaps of stuff works with zwave... Wish list Deadbolt Garage door Lights Cooling/heating Blinds Smart windows (tint) film Google home/ amazon alexa Naeto connected Security system which work with automation..... More to add.... Thanks for the tip! Assume you have the Saturn range of switches installed? I have asked for Saturn Zen switches for all downstairs areas in my new build with future Z-wave in mind. Have a few questions... Assume the same applies for 3-way switches as well? Have one in the staircase and entryway. Also, that I need just 1 Z-wave controller to control each 2/3-way switch circuit? Which Z-wave module did you get which is compatible with the Saturn range? Do you know of a Saturn compatible Z-wave module which allows for LED light dimming? Do you use Z-wave to control your fans? If so, could you pls let me know which one you use? What about Z-wave module behind regular switches? I have these in the upstairs areas, and I was under the assumption that if you do not need dimming, you could use a regular switch (not the Saturn range) Re: Smart Doorbell, I'm thinking of DoorBird - which has a proprietary SIP compatibility, but offer Smart Transmission Mode for mobile access. They are more open compared to Ring, and the hacker community had done some cool things with it... Did you hire your own sparky to install the modules? If so, do you mind sharing what I should budget in terms of $$$ and hours? If so, do you mind sharing what I should budget in terms of $$$ and hours? Saturn switches are nice, but I actually didn't get them. I've got the standard range with Impress switches. I wanted to keep all the faceplates consistent, including the ethernet, but the Saturn range is a bit limited. Oh, and not to mention, cost. I just didn't see it as good bang for buck. It was also my first foray into z-wave, so didn't know how full on I wanted to go. I use the Aeon Labs in-wall switches (I can recommend Capital Smarthomes- very good customer service), though I'm thinking of giving the Fibaro units a try. Easy to install, especially if you know an electrician who accepts payment in beer vouchers. The Aeon units, and I believe Fibaro, accept either a momentary or toggle switch, and yeah, one unit can do a two/three way switch. Basically, you need one controller per thing you want to turn on/off, regardless of the number of switches. Though, note, you can get double units, which control two devices in one z-wave unit. I don't control fans with z-wave, so can't comment on that Doorbell, I got the Amroad DP3210 http://www.amroad.com.tw/amroad-products/amroad-dp3210/ The technology has gotten cheaper with more entrants to the market since I bought mine, so best to do your own research. I just needed something that did SIP/VoIP Hope that helps Re: Home Technology Hub 299Dec 29, 2016 10:21 pm Wow, so much here since I last looked at this thread I love garages believe me and the best current HA for them is Gogogate.
