Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Jul 05, 2008 8:28 pm Hi guys,
Looking for some more help As mentioned before we are building the Cremorne 41 with PD, It is a double story home. We would ideally like to have 4 TVs running in our home. 2 upstairs - 1 in main bedroom, 1 in upstairs games room 2 downstairs - 1 in main living area, 1 in rumpus room (not a HT sorry ) We would ideally like these 4 tvs wall mounted with an infrared repeating kit (thanks Matt and Rod) throughout so we can access Foxtel, DVDs, Xbox etc and not have heaps of cords/boxes around the place. When I had my electrical appointment with PD it was really dissapointing, the guy that did it was our s/c and he has no special knowledge in electricals and really didn't get what I wanted. When I told him about the wall mounted plasmas he suggested raising the powerpoint and the tv socket up the wall so it would be hidden behind the TV. I remember Matt saying this was a no go as it will get to hot...if this is the case where can I ask to have the pp and tv point put? I don't really like the idea of a cord coming down the wall etc I prefer to have it all hidden. The wall that the tv would be wall mounted on in the main bedroom has nothing on the other side - but brick of course. The upstairs rumpus backs onto a linen press and another bedroom The downstairs rumpus will back onto the living room wall where I want the TV and the living room tv will back onto the rumpus tv. I have attached a link to the plan, so I hope it all makes sense. Is what I am saying achievable? I am still waiting to hear back from PD about the infrared repeating kit, but I plan to get someone privately to do this side of things for me as I am hoping a specialist in the field would have a better idea of what I want. Ok here is the plan...what do you think? Can I wall mount on all of the walls mentioned, and can i do it without cords/cables being seen? Where would you recommend I locate the Tv point and powerpoints for the tvs/foxtel/etc. Thanks for any help everyone http://www.porterdavis.com.au/content/H ... orne41.pdf My karma ran over your dogma Re: Wall mounts, electricals and all that jazz! 2Jul 07, 2008 11:10 am What you can do is put the power point and TV point down at normal height (300mm from floor) DIRECTLY below where you would want the cords (power/TV antenna) to come out behind each TV. Then all you really need to do before moving in is make sure you drill at least one hole in the noggin(s) between the power point / TV point and where the cords will need to come out, and that the hole is big enough to get at least one end of the power cord through (be aware that the sparky could put the power point and TV point either side of a stud).
Then you can run the cords from behind each TV, down inside the wall to where the power and TV points are, and simply have the cord come out, for example, right underneath the power point where you then simply curve it up and neatly plug it into the power point (same for TV antenna). Kinda like this: Re: Wall mounts, electricals and all that jazz! 3Jul 07, 2008 4:08 pm Interesting Rod - I like it, I'll speak to the PD sparkys and see what they think.
My other option was to get a bracket that put the tv sort of forward off the wall a bit and keeping the powerpoint behind it. I am also at my electrical stage and was thinking of wall mounting 2 of our tvs. I always thought that we needed to put the powerpoint/tv point behind the tv so that no wires are visible. However, lucky that I read this thread because now I know that if you put it behind the tv, it gets too hot. I dont quite understand what Rodda was trying to say, and the picture he posted does not work anymore. Can Rodda or anyone else elaborate on this?! Sorry for my ignorance! Thanks. I think what Rodda was saying is that you can run your power and other cables up through the walls between the studs. The cables will enter from behind where the TV is to be mounted (through a hole in the plasterboard), down b/w the studs (hole thru the noggin) and down towards the floor. The cables will come out of the wall (another potential hole in plasterboard). Or save yourself some aggro, and get some calbe tray/conduit installed in the wall after the sparkie has "roughed in" and before the plasterboard goes up. Hope this helps (and hope this is what Rodda was saying - or I've misconstrued it) Re: Wall mounts, electricals and all that jazz! 6Jun 07, 2009 7:33 pm Hi was just reading your posts and was wondering, when mounting the TV on the wall with the power point directly behind it what gets "hot". The TV, the cables, the power point, i don't quite understand. Are you saying we shouldn't mount the TV on the wall or put the power point somewhere else. thanks Re: Wall mounts, electricals and all that jazz! 7Sep 08, 2009 11:11 am I am having the same issues. I organised for the PP behind the TV (sorta below it actually, between where the mount will be and the bottom of the TV). I like the idea of running the power through the wall cavity from the TV and popping it out at the bottom but didnt think this was allowed for DIYers?? Isnt this against some code or something about concealed 240V power leads? Same as people running extension leads in wall cavitys? I thought all this stuff was a big no no? If its OK I will be moving that PP somewhere else me thinks.. Re: Wall mounts, electricals and all that jazz! 8Sep 08, 2009 3:01 pm Illegal for DIY regradless.. as for the type of cable.. if you are getting a sparky into do everyting else jsut get them to mount a power point in the area behind where te TV will be going along with an outlet/wall plate for any other cables...
