Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Apr 16, 2015 10:23 pm Hi, we are building a 25 square double story home later this year. I am confused as to what to do. Do we need different cabling that if we had NBN? We will have children's bedrooms upstairs. 3 children ranging from 13 to 3. Should we have more than one data point upstairs? Kids will not have TVs or laptops in their rooms. (at least that's what we think will happen) We are not big tv watchers and children are discouraged from using ipod or laptop in their bedroom. We are thinking they will do that sort of thing in the public areas of the house. Will we need more than one point downstairs? Do we need to future proof and how would we do that? thanks, Regards, Limefroggy Re: New build - what to do for data in non NBN enabled area 2Apr 17, 2015 9:47 am Absolutely no difference to how you cable up your house in a non-NBN area to a NBN area, other than one less ethernet connection. If you want connectivity through your house, stick to cabling rather than wireless. Obviously tablets and phones are going to need a wireless access point, but try to maximise cabling over wireless. Futureproof by going for Cat6 cabling rather than Cat5 or Cat5E (both of which work perfectly fine NOW). The extra cost of Cat6 over Cat5/5e is negligible, so best to go for Cat6. Depending upon length of your house, you might need more than one wireless AP. I'd also suggest mounting the wireless AP's in the ceiling with their aerials protruding through the ceiling to maximise wireless connectivity (the wireless signal will have less obstructions just under the ceiling than on say a desk with other furniture in the way. On smaller builds you can run all cabling to a single wall-plate in an office. On larger builds with many data cables, run everything to a patch panel in a central location such as a garage.
