Just to clarify, this is a Blu-Ray Disc recorder. DVD (Digital Versatile Disc) and Blu-Ray Disc are two different things. Don't get confused, or allow yourself to be confused by others (sales people perhaps). If you or someone is referring to a device as a Blu-Ray DVD recorder then you should clarify which of the two technologies you're actually talking about to ensure you don't end up with the wrong one... Re: Blue ray dvd player and recorder in one 7Jun 20, 2008 9:22 pm ok Im confused LOL
at the price, backs away slowly from the page um so...we got quoted on a blue ray player and a dvd recorder and I couldnt work out why 2 different things (meaning I thought by now there would be a unit with both functions) what is the big thing a blueray recorder does then, record onto special HDD discs or something *scratches head* do we need that? (even if we do we arent getting it LOL) Re: Blue ray dvd player and recorder in one 8Jun 20, 2008 10:01 pm Hi Bec.
The big difference is Blu-Ray Discs hold about 5-6 times the amount of data as a DVD. If you plan on recording Hi-Def broadcasts (onto the unit's in-built HDD) and then wanting to burn them off onto disc for archiving or whatever, you won't be so quick to run out or disc space (which would happen very quickly if you were burning onto DVD-R/RW). Just to be clear, that Panasonic unit IS a Blu-Ray Disc recorder (first available in Aus I think). It will play Blu-Ray discs and record onto recordable Blu-Ray discs. It will also play DVDs (don't know if it can record onto DVD-R/RWs though - can't be bothered looking into that right now...). I just wanted to be sure you understood the difference between the 2... Re: Blue ray dvd player and recorder in one 10Jun 21, 2008 10:12 am Another thing you might want to check, especially if you have DVD's bought from o'seas or are another region code is, will your new player play them. Rod, does a Blu-ray player normally come with a hard disk drive to record on to? I've been told different by a Hardly Normal salesman, not that I necessarily believe him. 'Scuse my ignorance on these components. We've just put a deposit on a full HD plasma, and intend to buy a Blu-ray player 'one day.' We presently have a Pioneer hard disk recorder/DVD player - burner and use its tuner to watch my old clunker CRT TV through, and do a small amount of temporary recording. We don't habitually burn DVD's for permanent recording anyway so if Blu-ray players have a hard disk of reasonable capacity, it will suit our needs to a tee when hooked up to our new TV when we get it for watching Blu-ray discs and getting the full benefit of the plasma, and recording some programs temporarily. Another silly question. Does a Bly-ray player, besides playing Blu-ray discs and DVD's, also play CD's? Thanks. Geoff - Decophile. Re: Blue ray dvd player and recorder in one 12Jun 22, 2008 9:48 am Hi Geoff.
No, Blu-Ray players don't come with HDDs, just like a DVD player wouldn't come with one (there may be an exception to this rule but I'm not aware of it). If the unit's purpose (today's recorders, not VHS based antiques...) is to record content, especially if it has a tuner and can record TV feeds, then it will invariably have a HDD in it (again, there may be exceptions to this rule also...) as it is much, much more convenient for temporary storage. A put together a PC for watching and recording digital TV (it has 2 HD tuners in it), and I made sure I included a DVD burner. This Media Centre PC has been central to my TV viewing for over 2 years now. So far, I have not burnt off 1 DVD of anything I've recorded... When looking for a Blu-Ray player, if you want it to play any other media (DVDs, DVD-R/RWs, CDs, CD-R/RWs, DVD-As) you need to confirm if it can or not. There are some Blu-Ray players out there, for example, that can't even play normal CDs... Re: Blue ray dvd player and recorder in one 14Jun 23, 2008 11:21 am if one recorded something on a blue ray recorder onto a disc
can it only be blue ray disc and then would others be able to view it on a normal recorder? just found this.... Super Multi-Format Recording & Playback Incredible recording versatility with Super Multi-Format recording and playback. You can enjoy recording of BD-RE, BD-RE DL, BD-R, BD-R DL, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD-R DL, DVD-RW, DVD +R, DVD +R DL, DVD+RW so yes can record onto dvd as well? Re: Blue ray dvd player and recorder in one 15Jun 23, 2008 12:58 pm I'm going to sit tight, and continue to enjoy my humble DVDs on a up-scaling player.
Eventually the market will settle with choice and competitive prices. At least the Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD argument has been settled!
