Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Jun 18, 2008 1:31 pm here is a really dumb question for the gurus.
we are putting a HT room in our new place, it will be approx 6.5m x 4.5m. It is a 6:1 system running off a Yamaha RX-V1. The room has an opeing approx twice the width of a standard door opening. I have been pondering if I need to put in a wall cavity mounted slide door to close off the room when we are using it. Question is does have the room open hinder or enhance the sound quality? My initial thought is that it will enhance it as it will act a bit like bass reflext speaker port? I could be toataly wrong on that. thoughts? Re: Home theatre room - does it need a door for better sound? 2Jun 18, 2008 1:33 pm Doors (and closing them) will make people in other rooms like you better when watching a movie
I doubt you will notice any difference with or without. Perhaps someone can do the experiment for you, open doors then close and see what the diff is. Re: Home theatre room - does it need a door for better sound? 3Jun 18, 2008 1:41 pm What sort of display are you having. Keep in mind you will probably want to have a dark room, especially if you are considering a projector. An opening will make this pretty difficult! Built Porter Davis "Dromana" 2007. Re: Home theatre room - does it need a door for better sound? 4Jun 18, 2008 1:45 pm Most of the display homes that have serious HT rooms have the opening behind the seats and I cant remember seeing any doors on those rooms... or windows for that matter. Re: Home theatre room - does it need a door for better sound? 5Jun 18, 2008 1:58 pm I wondered about this, too. Ours is at the back of the house, coming off a hallway, wtih storage cupboard, powder room and laundry behind it, and it doesn't have a door on it - I think the opening is the same as a narrow door, but higher than average - 2340mm(?) Should we pput a door in post handover.?..hmmm...yet another detail to consider...... Solidarity, not solidity.......The Lexicon of Life Re: Home theatre room - does it need a door for better sound? 6Jun 18, 2008 2:01 pm mikkyG Most of the display homes that have serious HT rooms have the opening behind the seats and I cant remember seeing any doors on those rooms... or windows for that matter. I dont think what they normally have in display homes are "serious" HT rooms!! You really need to control the light coming in and the sound going out....or you wont see your screen well, and will drive everyone else in the place bonkers! Built Porter Davis "Dromana" 2007. Re: Home theatre room - does it need a door for better sound? 7Jun 18, 2008 2:11 pm light control is the only reason I would really think of fitting the sliding doors. Our current HT room has timber blinds and heavy dark drapes, both ends have a door so we can effectively have total darkness.
For the new room it has glass to the back and to most of one side, again timber blinds and heavy drapes will solve that. So my thoughts would be to add in the sliding door only as a light control device in case we want to watch something during daylight hours. Projector is a Yamahas LPX-510, not in same class as the flagship DLP models but your not paying over $16k for it either. We have a 98" fixed screen. AV is a Yamaha RX-V1 Re: Home theatre room - does it need a door for better sound? 8Jun 18, 2008 2:13 pm I think with a projector, you'd be nuts not to have doors! Even if you are watching something at night and someone else needs lights on in the adjacent room/s. Built Porter Davis "Dromana" 2007. Re: Home theatre room - does it need a door for better sound? 9Jun 18, 2008 2:14 pm I have used an open room for my HT and wish I had doors on it.
With a projector it is so much clearer. I have now put a pull down blind on my front door to keep any light coming in and that helps. I also mainly use it at night time. You really need to control the light coming in and the sound going out....or you wont see your screen well, and will drive everyone else in the place bonkers! Vanders you took the words right out of my mouth. A 'serious' HT room would definitely have the ability to completely close it off form the rest of the house. You have more control over the light coming in, you reduce the amount of noise going out and the amount of background noise coming in (which will actually make the sound in the room seem clearer and louder). That said, I'm sure there are plenty of very cool and practical HT rooms that have an open door or completely open end, but there is still a difference. As far as genuinely improving the acoustics inside the room - consider all of the surfaces. Many big, open, flat, hard surfaces will hurt the quality of the sound in the room, so in a sense putting doors in will only add to that, but the gains mentioned above are more important than this smaller negative. Tame as many of the other surfaces as you can (P.S. people building 'serious' HT rooms with timber floors need to think again....) - carpet, curtains, plush furniture - these all help. As far as the door acting like a bass reflex port??? A. Impossible - bass reflex ports are of an exact tuned length/size to accentuate certain frequencies produced behind the driver in the subwoofer enclosure, to improve or enhance the sub's output in those frequency areas. B. If it was possible the improvement would be heard/felt by people outside the room/port... Put the door in to control the ambient light and background noise, and to be kinder to the people in the rest of the house. That's exactly what my double-cavity-sliders are for. Yeah most are pretty average at best, there are a few builders in Canberra we looked at for ideas and they defiantly have serious setups. The buggers generally have a staff member and a chain to stop you going in an nicking off with their gear and for that you get the privilege of hearing the new transformers movie coursing through 'every room' of the house while you are trying to have a conversation with the sales assistant But if anyone in Canberra is looking for ideas I'd suggest heading out to Forde display village I think the builders are secretly having a sound/theater off Hi We have a road close to our place and only an old flimsy wooden fence between us and the Neighbour closest to the road. Any ideas on a sound proof modular fence. Like… 0 5682 Grate, thank you! RexChan if thats the reason i could sleep well without thinking about additional cost.
