Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Mar 21, 2015 6:16 pm Currently planning my data points for my build and was wondering if this would work and be cheaper. At the moment i am getting quoted about $80 a data point. At that price i am looking at approx 24 points for the whole home which would equate to about $1900. I'm thinking instead just run a single data point to each room then have a 4-8 point desktop switch coming off that. Is there any problems running data from the router to the main switch, then to another desktop switch in each room? Ive seen some good 4-8 points switches for about $30-50 each, and this route would be better financially. Re: Data points through two switches? 2Mar 21, 2015 7:12 pm Would work but would be like running a 4 lane highway and merging it down to 1 lane... Bottleneck. Re: Data points through two switches? 4Mar 24, 2015 5:53 am You can do it if you really want it, though obviously multiple data points is better if you can afford it. If you do decide to use switches, you will need to ensure that the switch you are using has a good switching capacity. So if you have 8 port switch, make sure it is a gigabit switch with 16 gigabit capacity (ie. full duplex gigabit). I'm not recommending this switch, as I just did a quick google search and grabbed the first relevant link, but just to illustrate my point: http://www.tp-link.com.au/products/deta ... 1008D#spec Paddington 29 @ Blue Horizon Estate (Lot 105, Wattleridge Crescent, North Kellyville) Our Build Progress Blog: http://light487.wordpress.com/ Re: Data points through two switches? 6Mar 24, 2015 10:07 am Thanks all for your responses; greatly appreciated. Light487, that is the type of switch i am looking at for each room. As they are pretty cheap i think i may go down that line as the power consumption is only 4W and they somewhat shutdown when not in use. From a speed perspective i have done some research and the majority have said the speed of transfer through two switches is insignificant. The main secondary switches in bedrooms and lounge room will mainly be the only ones mainly used at one time, so hopefully there wont be a problem. Re: Data points through two switches? 8Mar 26, 2015 7:55 pm Power for each switch will be 5-10W Sounds like a waste of electricity. However data cabling can come in handy for other things such as extending HDMI video which will not work through a switch. Another thing you can do for data is buy splitters which use 4 of the 8 wires for data allowing you to connect two Ethernet devices to the same cable. Here's an example one: http://www.4cabling.com.au/cat-5e-cable ... -data.html. You couldn't use splitters for HDMI or other media conversion devices as they usually use all 8 wires.

Only places I can see initially needing more than 2 points is the family, theatre and retreat. Only really need two in the bedrooms for TV and another device. Don't know which way to go. Re: Data points through two switches? 12Mar 27, 2015 7:51 am If you have a single story and there is roof access to the rooms you can have them put in some strings in the walls to install more cables later if you want. I have a friend that is going the route of the switches to save cost and it works for him. I guess no one can really decide for you but I would emphasise more cabling to your main bedroom and wherever you will spend the most time with digital entertainment. What you want to do will work, most businesses use this model to do say each level of their office or connect different buildings. For the house I would not do it, looks cheap and god help you if you need to touble shoot. Splitters work but I would keep away from them(the can get d*dgy or not work with certain applications- i.e more troubleshooting) mixo p.s the naughty word filter is a B... Re: Data points through two switches? 14Mar 27, 2015 4:03 pm Have a meeting with Hillstone on Tuesday so will see what they have to offer. They seem to deal with Clipsal Starserve to run everything out of. At the moment lookin at 4 points in the retreat and hone theatre and 2 points for the bedrooms and family room, then a single point in the laundry and one for the kitchen bench and one for the refrigerator. Also need 8 TV points for the house. Will be intestine to see what the total price is for the setup. What is the going rate for data points these days? Re: Data points through two switches? 15Mar 27, 2015 6:47 pm I'm doing mine during the build(private builder), no way i can afford an electrician to run 450 meters of cat 6 to 32 odd points. Its pretty easy to do and for the price of one point you get the tools and the rest is money in your pocket to do other things. In saying this I believe its illegal to do it yourself in most states. So i will be terminating after hand over. mixo Re: Data points through two switches? 16Mar 27, 2015 10:32 pm Aussie141414 Have a meeting with Hillstone on Tuesday so will see what they have to offer. You could easily have a TV, amp, Blueray/DVD, Foxtel, a games console or two, PVR, Sonos box, etc. Get at least 6 or even 8. ----------------------------------------------- http://pab34newdigs.blogspot.com.au/ ----------------------------------------------- Re: Data points through two switches? 17Mar 28, 2015 6:32 am For me, the ugliness comes from having 6 to 8 data points on the wall. I like clean walls.. I know.. the TV cabinet etc will be there to block the view.. but yeah.. I don't want my walls covered in power points, data points and so on. One singular box with little flashing lights alongside the other little boxes is less ugly.. but that's me. If that's ugly.. wait till you add the Power Points, Surround Sound, USB and HDMI plates to the collection in the Theatre Room lol.
