Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation Re: cabling plan 21Feb 23, 2015 9:23 am Running network cables is supposed to be done by a licenced cabler, and if people want to be sure everything properly certified, then you will have to pay the dollars for it. Of course, if you do have some knowledge in cabling and have the confidence to do so, even though you may not be licenced there should be no huge issue in doing it yourself. At the very least most people can run some cat6 (or similar) cable throughout their home whilst being built, subject to their builder allowing them to do so... don't run this cable right alongside with your 230v cabling though! Once cabled, you can then get your licenced cabler in to terminate the cables pre-laid. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld. Whilst I agree with you and others on this thread that running in a bit of cat6 is not rocket science, and as long as someone keeps it away from power and doesn't kink the cat6 cable, it should turn out ok. But it's still illegal, and I can't endorse or encourage anyone to do it. Even running in the cables and having a licenced cabler terminate them is not legal, strictly speaking, and unless he is your best mate, I doubt any licenced cabler would risk his licence by terminating cabling that he can't see and didn't install. Do it at your own risk, but don't complain if it doesn't work properly or if you get fined. You're quite correct technically it is illegal and few licenced cablers will sign off on hidden cables, as he doesn't know what you've done behind all of that gyprock... for all he knows you may have taped all the cat6 to the TPS all the way through. However if the cabler is your best mate, chances are he'll start you off, and point out a few key things you need to ensure you do... a stranger won't tell you anything, and that then becomes your risk alone. Re: cabling plan 24Feb 23, 2015 8:26 pm I rang our electrical consultant today and they were happy to add 4 more data points for us. Price per data point was $96.50 fully installed during the build process. We decided to throw one in each bedroom (5), one in the upstairs lounge, one in the downstairs lounge and one in the downstairs study, so 8 all together plus our hills hub in the garage. We have a relatively small house, so we don't have media room or rumpus but if we did, we'd throw one in each too. Got to think that it's not just PCs and laptops connecting to them but smart TVs etc as well. Just curious if that's an option for us? Yup, definitely sounds like a workable solution in our case. We generally only have a max of two devices going in each location currently and that's not going to change.. we don't actually own a smart TV and use other devices to do all the "smart" stuff anyway, so I think it will be fine Paddington 29 @ Blue Horizon Estate (Lot 105, Wattleridge Crescent, North Kellyville) Our Build Progress Blog: http://light487.wordpress.com/ Re: cabling plan 29Feb 24, 2015 8:02 am You would want a dumb switch not a router to still stay within layer 1 or 2. Some routers do switching, but most cheap ones don't. An 8 port GB dumb switch is very cheap. I have single points to each room from my main router and switch area and then a dumb switch in each of those rooms to distribute it to the devices. It's cheaper to buy a switch ~$30 than pay for an additional data port. ~$90.
