Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Sep 05, 2014 10:31 am Hi Looking for some advice on what switch to buy to set up my home network. We are lucky to be building in an area that has NBN FTTH so i have run 18 Cat5e cables (i now cat6 would be better but the box i got was the right price!) through the house and can run more (downstairs) if needed as can access under the house easily. I have the typical ethernet runs to each location in the house that we needed them (plus a few 'extras 'just in case') that terminate in the garage as this is were the NBN NTD all be installed. I'm wanting an unmanaged gigabit 24 port switch that is going to be fuss free and reliable. Happy to spend a few hundred dollars as think this will buy something middle of the road but happy to hear opinions if I'm wrong. Looking at this from TP Link. http://www.tp-link.com.au/products/details/?categoryid=1588&model=TL-SG1024D#fea Or this from HP http://www8.hp.com/au/en/products/networking-switches/product-detail.html?oid=4220265#!tab=specs Happy to get either but has to be rack mountable as will be mounting on the wall veritably to save space. Any thoughts on either unit or better suggestions? Any suggestion on Modem/routers would be great to as the list is almost endless. Looking to use for Wifi for laptop and iPhone ect as most things will be connect to the network but want to be able to have a 2-4TB HDD connected to the modem router to be used as a NAS for movies and music. Thanks as always for your replies Re: 24 Port Gigabit Switch and modem/router Suggestions 2Sep 05, 2014 10:46 am A 24 port unmanaged switch is pretty much a commodity item, so functionality wise they will all be fine. I know that HP has a lifetime warranty, so that might be something in the HP's favour. If you are on FTTH then you don't need a modem, just a router. Depending on the layout of your home you can get a router with WiFi and either
You can also use stand-alone WiFi access points, such as the Unifi range - these mount on the wall or ceiling and receive their power over the Cat-5 cabling. You can then either get a router without WiFi (can be tricky as most seem to include it) or disable the WiFi, but this can be installed in the garage without worrying about the impact on WiFi coverage Re: 24 Port Gigabit Switch and modem/router Suggestions 3Sep 05, 2014 11:11 am Hi paulw11 Thanks for the quick reply. Sorry for the bad terminology regarding the modem/router just happy i had it in my head regarding whats needed and how to set it up. i was looking at this from TPlink http://www.tp-link.com.au/products/details/?categoryid=2268&model=TL-WDR3600 But if i need more speed and bandwidth could spend another $100ish on this if you think its worth it? Issue i see is that most things that would connect to is aren't 802.11ac compatible so would be more of a future proof route http://www.tp-link.com.au/products/details/?categoryid=2872&model=Archer+C7 24 Port Gigabit Switch and modem/router Suggestions 4Sep 16, 2014 9:24 pm I would go with the hp pro curve gigabit unmanaged switch.
