Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Jun 29, 2014 10:00 am We are having a theatre/guest room in our new house. Obviously it wont be able to be the most acoustically perfect theatre room around, but what would be the best set up in this case? It will be an open theatre/guest to the games room. Our plans... We will have a murphy bed 'wall' in this room somewhere that will house the bed, as well as storage and all things data, cables, hubs and (insert technology jargon here). When we had to downsize our house plans we combined games and media and we tried to go for something like this... Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ There will be carpet to the floor, dark painted matt walls, perhaps we can put an open-able long theatre block out curtain (similar to what can be seen on a stage) between games and theatre for when we want to watch movies in darkness. I wouldn't mind a step up into the theatre side of the room, but hubby is easy either way. Hubby wants to use a projector onto the murphy bed back which will be made of matt melamine, is that a suitable surface to project onto? The size of the room is 4500x4000 approx. The width can be changeable. What would be the best set up regarding TV vs projector? Sound system or number of speakers? Where would the best place be for the bed, which wall? Thanks reading the loooong, long question. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. cheers Sandra Re: Multi purpose theatre. What would be the best set up? 2Jun 29, 2014 10:06 am With such an open room, I think I'd be going for the largest LED TV you could afford. I think with the general lack of light control, and your stated accoustically imperfect set up, a projector won't really work that well at all. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld. What would be the best set up? 4Jul 06, 2014 5:38 pm At that size a 70" tv will be ideal, however......... TV's don't have that omg factor and as you have a great space for both 'games' and theatre you will want some wow. You will need to control the light but some one like Elite screens have great projector paint for the wall. A basic 5.1 channel amp with a second zone for speakers in the games area shouldn't be too expensive and well worth it in the end. Just because the area isn't perfect doesn't mean you can't give it a go. Re: Multi purpose theatre. What would be the best set up? 5Jul 09, 2014 10:00 am Thanks so much for the input. With regards to light control, we envision to have a theatre/complete blockout curtain running across between the games theatre room divide. The louvred windows will also be aluminium so all light will be blocked there too. the murphy bed will be going along the complete length of wall (on the hallway side) with the back of the folded up bed being where the projector screen will be. So with all the light dramas sorted, all we are concerned about is the acoustics of the room. Could you get a decent set up with one wall essentially being a big sheet of fabric? Cheers Sandra Re: Multi purpose theatre. What would be the best set up? 6Jul 09, 2014 10:11 am Acoustics are more complex to deal with than just hanging a sheet of fabric. It is a muti-purpose room and will have compromises. My friend has a 160 inch screen that drops down in front of his tv and 7.1 surround in his main living area. He used roller blinds and light is in no way properly contained. Daytime is not ideal but night time viewing is awesome. A survey must’ve completed by a certified surveyor.
