Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Jun 28, 2014 2:51 pm Hi All, We have chosen a house plan that we really like, unfortunately the Home theatre room is not very deep. So I need to figure out the best set-up that will suit our needs and the room size. We currently have a 46" Sony Full HD 3D LED in our apartment and we both love the quality of display from that. My fiance loves watching movies, so this room will be a dedicated movies room with some gaming (if I have time ). Our (her) must haves: - Full HD 3D compatible display - High quality picture - Surround Sound (5.1 as I think 7.1 will be too much for such a small room) - Internet Access From what I gather a projector is good for low light rooms which means we will need really thick blinds on that window. My concern is the distance I have to work with is limited. Based on the size of the room can anyone advise us on what would best suit our needs? Projector or LED TV? Will 5.1 be sufficient to provide a 'Cinema Experience'? This is what the plan looks like and the Theatre room is 4.0m x 3.5m. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Thanks! Re: Small Home theatre advice 2Jun 28, 2014 7:57 pm If the seating and screen position is going to remain as in the plan, then I think I'd be sticking with a nice big led screen, as I don't think a projector is going be worth it. Also, you're quite correct a 7.1 system won't work in that sized room, 5.1 should be okay for you. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld. Hi bpratt, We were thinking of switching the seating and TV around but still I think that wouldn't change the outcome. By not worth it, do you mean the screen size that we will get out of it being that close? Excellent, thank you for your advice. Re: Small Home theatre advice 4Jun 28, 2014 8:44 pm If you are switching the layout you are still going to have possibly one row of seating. The projector and big LED display will work out fairly similar cost (maybe more for projector but can go bigger). My buddy is about 4m from the screen and has a 160inch 16x9 screen, it is huge, prob too big but it is cool to watch movies on..... I would actually still go 7.1 and use ceiling mounted speakers as they do not cost so much. With more HT amps coming out with better tech I would equip to take advantage of the different sound set-ups. My current library of around 200 HD movies has many being True HD 5.1 and lesser for 7.1 but when you have the 7.1 you can hear the difference. Go and see some set-ups and see what your options are. Hi AussieMark, Yea, the only reason for switching was that is how we saw it in the display with a projector and we liked it. Wow 160inch @ 4 meters is massive! We were thinking of going 100" max for the 3.5m distance. With 7.1 wouldn't we need to center the couch more so we get the full behind/middle/front sound experience? We would probably want to be as far back from the screen as possible in such a small space. I think you are spot on, I really need to look at some real life examples and see what we prefer. Re: Small Home theatre advice 6Jun 29, 2014 2:00 am Check out krix atmospherix they go in the roof and angle forward. You could use those as your rears and then sides step them in a little. I am in a very tight dual purpose room at the moment and I run 7.1 and its great. The rears are behind and the sides are inline with our ears. I am sure some of the showrooms will have lots of different sized rooms and then they can mix and match to suit budgets. In the west there is a place called westcoast hifi in midland that has about 6 or so setups and it really lets you get a sense of what your $ buys but also where so spend and on what. Re: Small Home theatre advice 7Jun 29, 2014 7:33 am Awesome I will check out those speakers and go to some hifi places. Hopefully that will give me a good idea of what we are after.
