Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Jun 06, 2014 8:57 pm Hi all, Trying to finalise a new build. And I need to get the data cabling right and not do patchwork as I have done in my existing 25-year old home. The floorplan is attached and the devices are marked in green. All devices definately need a ethernet cable 5e/6. Also not shown are smartphones, a tablet and laptop which can be anywhere in the house. Data Cabling Basically, need one ethernet point in each room, EXCEPT for Family room and Study, which will have multiple devices. My understanding so far is: Hills Home Hub (or similar) will be installed in Garage. NBN modem will go in the hub (I am building in The Ponds 2769). From the modem, ethernet cables will go to each room with one outlet in each room. And multiple outlets in Study & Family room. Audio - I also have a marantz SR5006 AVR which is a 2-zone AVR. Good idea to put the second zone in Alfresco ? - Will the Audio cabling have anything to do with the Home Hub ? Entertainment - TV points will be installed in all bedrooms and rooms. - If I need the ability to run the Main bedroom TV off the IPTV box in Family room, what needs to be done ? - I don't have Foxtel and probably won't have for the forseeable future, but does HHH cater for Foxtel wiring and in what way ? wifi How do I achieve a strong wifi signal throughout the house ? Mount your wireless access point as high as possible. If possible mount in ceiling space so you can easily hide both it and the power supply and ethernet cable connected to it. Preferably it will have replaceable aerials on it, so you plug in a high gain one, and better yet if you can poke that aerial downwards in to the room below it. Like in AR, "height is might", so mounting the access point as high as possible there will be a lot less objects in the way. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld. Re: New house build - networking and AV wiring 3Jun 07, 2014 8:48 am I've also added cat5 to any position there may be a TV later on, but of course you could simply use wifi. Most TV's will have that inbuilt anyway in the near future. In any case, it's more important to make it easy to run cabling or even piping through your walls later on, so predrilling of holes where appropriate is a good idea. Also with most devices being able to be charged via USB now, I'm thinking about using a GPO plate with dual usb sockets so the actual charger can be hidden in the roof. Mainly for the kitchen bench where most people seem to leave their devices charging overnight. Re: New house build - networking and AV wiring 6Jun 07, 2014 11:51 pm Go with Cat 6, and a cabler that knows Cat 6. Price difference between Cat 5e and 6 is probably under $100; cabler costs more. For flexibility, get a data cabinet and patch panel; cheaper and much better than a Hills. Have it in your study; you don't want dust with networking stuff. You can then connect your NAS directly to the switch, which can be rack mounted in the cabinet. Mount your access point in your linen cupboard; that way it's hidden, but you can get power to it easily. For the TV, just get a splitter. Re: New house build - networking and AV wiring 7Jun 08, 2014 5:35 pm You pretty much got the basic Idea, your modem/router will go inside your enclosure be it Hills Home Hub or Clipsal Star Serve, and all your data cables will connect to that, aswell as one from the NBN Network Termination Device. For home theatre, yes if you are using a Dual zone AVR, you can run speaker cabling to your alfresco as a provision, better to do it during build so the capability is there. Audio cabling will not have to run with the home hub, most of this will be from your desired postion of the Marrantz AVR, to your desired speaker locations be it in room and also exterior locations. Foxtel Cabling - Hills Home Hub can cater for whatever you require, to distribute foxtel you need a multi-switch which hills can provide, you need to use the proper sized hub that can fit the required multi-switch in there, e.g a 8 way multi-switch will need more room than a 4 way. Need to elaborate more about running your Bedroom TV off an IPTV box in the family room, why does the IPTV box need to be separated? Best solution is to have a separate IPTV box in the bedroom and thus you will need a data point in there. If you have satellite then you need two coaxial cables from your hub to every location where you want a Foxtel box (plus one for free-to--air antenna). If you have satellite then you only need one coaxial cable for Foxtel. Make sure your installer uses a Foxtel approved quad shield RG6 and compression connectors. When you get Foxtel installed they will provide a multiswitch (satellite) or splitter (cable) if required, so I wouldn't spend money on it yourself. Re: New house build - networking and AV wiring 9Jun 08, 2014 10:46 pm I doubt Foxtel would supply a multi-switch for free unless you are paying for subscriptions for boxes for every room on signup, their job is to ensure cabling is done only to the rooms they are supplying the set top boxes for. If you don't have multiple boxes then you don't need one. If you want Foxtel in multiple rooms there are easier ways than moving the box. Re: New house build - networking and AV wiring 11Jun 22, 2014 3:28 pm Hi all I am in the process of building a 2 storey house Plans to have the networks terminated under the staircase Has anyone done this b4 and use a switch and tv, adsl termi ated here? Re: New house build - networking and AV wiring 12Jun 25, 2014 6:31 pm wifi How do I achieve a strong wifi signal throughout the house ? Got any old wireless routers/modems sitting around the house? You can make them into Wifi Extenders for better coverage around the house Re: New house build - networking and AV wiring 13Jun 28, 2014 11:46 am Quote: Data Cabling Basically, need one ethernet point in each room, EXCEPT for Family room and Study, which will have multiple devices. You can transmit Phone, Audio, power , ethernet, IR over this cable . So the more the merrier. A new standard called (HDBaseT) will allow you to transmit HD Video over one cat5. Suggest you run 4 cat5/6 to your living area and 2 to all other areas and terminate all cables to one central area/Hub. Make sure your NBN Internet cable also lands here. Some people were having issues with NBN/iPrimus as they (or the 3rd party) were installing the modem & terminating the structured cabling inside the FTTH Cabinet. The issue is you may not have access to the FTTH Cabinet at all. Check if it's applicable to you. if yes the simple solution is to ensure that the structured cabling does not terminate in the FTTH Cabinet http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1916518 Quote: Audio - I also have a marantz SR5006 AVR which is a 2-zone AVR. This means you can't play music coming out of HDMI or Optical on Zone 2. check specs of your AVR. If Zone 2 is Analog it's useless. You can use Speaker B instead. Re: New house build - networking and AV wiring 14Jul 01, 2014 4:16 pm Hi all, been told it will cost extra $$$ to terminate the data cables under the staircase. so they must be done to the wall inside of the garage near the NBN. so patching to the wall 14 data points in the wall. (prefer not to use hills hub or clipsal starserve) Thinking of buying 6 RU cabinet and getting a 16 port switch with ADSL modem. (zero chance of NBN in the near future). for wifi can i run 2 netgear routers in bridge mode upstairs/downstairs (upstairs lounge room/study) to give good wifi coverage and turn off the wifi on the ADSL modem in the garage? or any other ideas, appointment in 2 weeks for electricals so need to decide one way or another TIA ugly99 Re: New house build - networking and AV wiring 15Jul 01, 2014 10:15 pm Yes you can run connect wireless routers to your data points upstairs and downstairs and use them as access points for your wireless devices.
