Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Jun 01, 2014 12:57 pm Hi all In the process of purchasing a new house and looking through the plans we have decided we want to change a living room and turn it in to a HT room. The room dimensions are not that big at being 3.31x4.35 Have had a look at the design of the room and looked at what I think could be a possible way to change it to take better advantage of the space Here I have current plan and next to it my idea Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I was thinking projector Would it be more ideal to have this room without a window at all? Alternatively I was thinking of maybe a couple of smaller windows that could be on the left and right and have the ability to either let light in or fully block it out. Otherwise if going buy the original plan the projector would put going to the shorter wall so not a lot of viewing distance. Would love to hear peoples thoughts. Not sure how much it would cost to get rid of the window and have a normal wall instead Matthew Re: New build smallish Home Theatre room 2Jun 01, 2014 1:12 pm You would think not having the window would not increase the price. I'm not a great fan of media rooms - so will leave that need to others. Distance looks good though. Re: New build smallish Home Theatre room 3Jun 01, 2014 1:45 pm Removing the window is a good idea, acoustically. However, you will then encounter Regulations in regard to ensuring adequate air supply. This can be as " borrowed air" from adjacent rooms, or mechanical ventilation. If the latter, I think a competent builder can do the maths, but for Mechanical Ventilation, Engineering will be required, allow $500, plus cost of fan and duct with installation. Smaller windows that meet the regulations, from memory 10% (might be 15%) of floor space would be the easiest option. Either Left/Right or Horizontal, but up high so as to reduce reflections would be better. Specify Double Glazed, but a larger gap, better for sound isolation.. Save a few dollars as well for actual Acoustic Treatment, in addition to Acoustic Isolation treatment. This is because the Room Ratios you are "stuck with" will have some peaks and dips in the response to certain frequencies. eg Some bass notes will be accentuated, others will be reduced. Adding tuned Bass Traps can help, just not that dimpled foam sheet! A few earlier threads give more detail.... For better isolation, several sheets of Fire Rated Plaster may be better than " Sound Rated " advertised products. Rockwool, now "Soundscreen" or a Knauf equivalent is probably the best insulation for this room. If you want better isolation internally, then consider alternative doors, as sliding doors are the worst type to seal off properly. A couple of Solid Core swing doors with good "all round" seals, ( Raven or equivalent ) should do the trick. Re: New build smallish Home Theatre room 4Jun 01, 2014 2:43 pm Yes depending on which state you are in you may not get around the "no window" rules. In addition to air you also need light and there are minimum window sizes to allow this for habitable rooms. I cannot tell what is adjacent to teh theatre but I would put the entry door on one of the side walls and orient the room with seating at the window end and screen on the now closed wall where you had the door way. See if that works. Ciao Mark Re: New build smallish Home Theatre room 5Jun 02, 2014 11:06 am If you really want a HT room, then sliding doors won't cut it. As has already been mentioned there is a requirement for both air and light in to the room, so you can not simply remove the window. Of course after the home has been built and you've moved in, there's nothing to stop you from plugging the window up afterwards. Also, I'd relocate the door to a side wall as Mark has suggested, and making the 'sliding doors' as a wall. As tezzab has suggested, using fire rated gyprock will greatly help keeping the sound in the room rather than through the house. Fire rated gyprock is cheaper and just as effective as soundcheck gyprock. You can also double layer it too with 'green glue' between the sheets, but that adds up too. Likewise accoustic batts in the walls will help keep the audio in the room. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld. Re: New build smallish Home Theatre room 6Jun 05, 2014 2:15 am I agree, do not do sliding doors in a Theatre room if sound quality is more of a priority than aesthetics.
