Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 May 26, 2014 5:35 pm Hey everyone, Building a new home with a media room and needing help with gear. I'm not ashamed to say that I'm a complete novice when it comes to this stuff. I'm looking at getting the full setup for a home theatre room 3.7 by 4.2. I'm thinking a 100inch fixed screen projector with speakers amp cables etc. and looking at spending about 5k. I will be using the screen for movies and sport and occasionally a ps4.. Could someone please recommend me suitable products within this budget range for the full setup. I should be able to get someone to install it for me so that might cut down on the cost. Cheers. Re: Home theatre package for 5k? 3May 28, 2014 11:07 pm If the room has windows, I'd consider a LCD screen instead, as it's more versatile in a lit situation. The room is also not that big, so I'd consider something smaller; I think the general advice is distance being 2.5x the screen size, which is about a 60" or 65" screen. Good projectors are also expensive, especially when you factor in the lens required, and they can be noisy. You also have to factor in the cost of replacement bulbs. Cables are not expensive; just get goo thick cables. As for sound, how good do you want? There are packages at the $2K mark (although it's easy to go higher), which leaves you $3K for the screen, which should give you a decent model. Re: Home theatre package for 5k? 4May 29, 2014 7:17 am Just my 2c about cables, don't listen to all the sales garbage about interference and HDMI versions, a cable is a cable. When I built my room everyone said get this and that and a 20 meter cable was going to cost me about $400 FOR A CHEAPIE with a ton of fancy mesh BS. I was recommended by "experts" even on this forum to buy more expensive cables still! I ended up getting it for $47 from an electrical wholesaler, and 6 years going it still works, not one drama and even works with my latest gadgets Xbox one and ps4, so future proofing can eat a big one. All the "experts" didn't know squat, they just wanted to sell expensive cables. I saw yesterday at Kmart you can get a 10 HDMI 1.4 cable for $17 now, I hope all those experts lost their jobs. Haha cheers for the advice. Also, not that keen on an LCD. Definitely after a projector. I have a friend with a similar screen size and similar room size and I love it. I don't think it's too close at all. But each to their own. This, its not like the old days where cable quality effected the signal. Everything is digital now. $4 HDMI cables do the same job as $50 HDMU cables. If you have no windows go a projector, if you have windows go a to screen. Sun light and projects don't mix. Also how proficient is your family at using multiple devices. Eg one for the TV, one for the amp, one for the DVD player, etc. You may be better off buying all the same brand as they will all generally communicate with the same remote. Get some light blocking blinds and heavy curtains. Paint the room dark. Add in a Logitech universal remote into your budget and configure it to make it easier for the family. You can set it so you press a button, and the projector turns on, AVR sets the output to PS4 and away you go. Not sure if it can turn the ps4 on as well, but I wouldnt put it past it Re: Home theatre package for 5k? 8May 30, 2014 8:03 pm BrendanH I disagree. Get some light blocking blinds and heavy curtains. But what's the point of having a window when your always going to have the blinds closed when you're in there. I bought a harmony remote for my parents, one of the first colour display ones and found it very laggy when changing channels. 2-3 second display. The remote was also horrible in terms of key configuration. And with the PS4 with the setup and my parents place there was a PS3 and you needed to buy an add-on to have the harmony work with the PS3. Definitely not user friendly for the non tech savy people. Re: Home theatre package for 5k? 9May 31, 2014 1:22 pm My Advice - try before you buy as online reviews can be misleading. You do get what you pay for, remember with a TV your going to get good picture quality in a lit and dark room, not always the case with projectors, perhaps you could get a 70" TV Instead, otherwise if size matters the projector is the go, just ensure you don't get too large of a display for where you plan to have all your seating positioned in your theatre room. When previewing a set of speakers, Ideally you want to hear them in a similar environment, that means not on a table at the shop with lots of background noise, but in a dedicated theatre room. All up it was $3200. We didn't want to spend big as we won't use it very often. We have almost finished setting it up and are very happy with our purchase!!! The projector we got was the Epson 5200 with a 110 inch screen. When I was looking for ceiling mounts I came across a website for selby acoustics and the package they have for the projector is better than what we paid and it's free shipping! Highly recommended as we bought all our brackets from there and was very smooth. http://www.selby.com.au/epson-eh-tw8200 ... -3789.html we have a window in our theatre but a blockout blind is sufficient. I think our expectation of what we want from the theatre room is similar to yours. Nothing fancy but does the job! Re: Home theatre package for 5k? 11May 31, 2014 3:58 pm Well in Perth you may not be able to get around the window situation as habitable rooms must have a window. I am having a dedicated home theatre and will have the smallest window possible which will be double glazed. I will use a combination of roller blockout put some heavy drapes. +1 for West Coast Hifi as they have many packages to suit many budgets. I will be going there for my purchase. Re: Home theatre package for 5k? 12Jun 27, 2014 6:08 pm That is a reasonable budget. You can get fully installed packages at that price (projector, amp , speakers plus installation) However, if you research a bit and try to buy the products seperatly then you are more likely to get a better deal and premium product with the same budget. For e.g. you can get a good Onkyo-Jamo combo at less than $2k. If you want better/premium quality go for Marantz/Jamo (or equivalent ) combo which can be .5-1k more depending on the model you choose. You can get good quality fixed HD screen at around $1k (unless you want cinemascope aspect 2.29:1 as against widescreen TV aspect at 16:9 or 1.77:1 ) Most importantly, for the audio gear (amp and speakers) , go to a showroom of your choice and listen to some music / movie. preferably listen to something that you have heard before (avoid store promotional tracks) Re: Home theatre package for 5k? 13Jun 28, 2014 12:01 am Just be careful not to blow your budget, most Entry level Jamos are nothing special for the price you pay, Marrantz AVR's are good but in the end if your after audio quality, get a standalone Amp, not an AVR. Jamos are in general good speakers but yes for the audiophile quality you have to go bit more higher. I will rate there speakers better than any other run-of-mill speakers. Again, let your ear be the judge. If you are happy with the music quality go with it. Re: Home theatre package for 5k? 16Jul 06, 2014 6:33 pm Subhashish Yup Amp instead of AVR for quality. +1 to BJ88 for that. At that price point, I don't think the difference between Amp and AVR would make any difference. If the budge goes up, you will find AVRs that will do as good a job as a dedicated Amp, unless you are looking at serious money on speakers and Amps. Re: Home theatre package for 5k? 17Jul 06, 2014 6:51 pm PHL, try looking at Emotiva, they provide decent amps. I think that you need to look at all in perspective. I am using Krix speakers and when I spoke to the tech department at Krix they told me that their speakers run fine on most AVR. Amps can always be upgraded and tech advances in the processor end. Speakers and amps worth spending more on as they do not upgrade so often. Re: Home theatre package for 5k? 18Jul 06, 2014 7:40 pm I have a mate who used special paint and painted the wall for the projector picture instead of buying a fixed screen.
