Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Jan 04, 2014 8:57 pm Hi Gang, Anyone got any comments/criticism (constructive or otherwise) on this package? Have been quoted $10,350 for the works including installation (prob have to do this in 2-3 stages). Set up will be main TV in living area with central cupboard containing all the 'gear'. A projector and screen in the media room (although this is actually a multi-purpose room and not dedicated theatre space), and another TV in the master (I KNOW, DON'T SAY IT! The husband's choice so his loss ). The media room dimensions are 4.6m x 5.6m... Screen will be going on shorter wall. Hearts are not set on any specific product or software so would welcome alternative (AKA, cheaper) suggestions. Plaster going in ~early Feb, sparkie will run all our cables, including to other areas for future-proofing (which immediately negates some of the value in the package). I'm not particularly well versed in this stuff but have done a bit of homework so I will start by highlighting the cost of the HDMI cables ! Have we got it covered??? Cheers! It is a component you may upgrade every 4-5 years as technology evolves. $1500 - $2500 will get you a reasonable projector. Ensure that you have a reasonably sized conduit run for cables to your projector. Some people make the mistake of putting in conduit that is too small. My electrician has put in 50mm diameter PVC pipe which they also use for vacuum ducts ( annoyingly they put two extra 90 degree bends in ). This is big enough to run one and perhaps two HDMI cables. The main reason is for upgrade in the future. You want to be able to easily install new cables to the the projector if future technology improvements demand it. Put some extra CAT 6 connections to your home theatre and to your living room TV. I am having 4 connections in my home theatre and 2 near my living room TV. Lots of devices are Internet enabled ( home theatre receivers, Internet enabled TVs, Internet TVs, video streaming devices such as Apple TV / chromecast ). It is better for these to have wired connections if you can manage it as some are bandwidth intensive and will flood your wifi network. You could share a Cat 6 outlet with a network switch but then you have another device that needs a power point. I am having two quad outlet powerpoints ( I.e. 8 outlets ) in my home theatre and a 4 outlet power point for my Tv in the living room. Speakers wise I would also look at Krix as they specialise in Cinema speakers. I would echo regarding being internet enabled and I would also consider separate circuits to run the amps etc. I would go more on the power outlets where you have all the gear and I would have some strategically located around the room. If you have electric recliners remember to consider how they will be powered. Wow I just saw the 990 15m hdmi, I thought 599 was a lot. I live in Singapore and a 15m 4k/2k compliant cable Aiborg G3000 is 180 SGD. Look around a bit more. One thing you could ask your builder is whether they are open to laying conduit with pull through cords so that you can wire it yourself when you have made all the decisions. Maximus, good call on the 50mm I will ask my builder for the same. I would also factor putting sound screen or rock wool in the ceiling for some sound insulation. SpeaK to Matt and also see what other packages or deals there are. There may be items in the current package that are more than you want or not up to what you want. I am sick of going through blu-ray players as the tracking seems to go off after a while. I built a Home Theatre PC which can also play Blu-Rays etc and that serves as a media server. That could be a consideration. So exciting, so many choices..... Good luck. Cheers Mark Re: Advice wanted on home theatre+ package. 5Jan 05, 2014 12:41 pm See what Matt and his guys come up with. They customized a full package for me that I couldn't be happier with and stayed late to complete the install. My 3D projector is wireless HDMI too so I didn't need to worry about a long expensive HDMI cable being run post construction Completed a knock down and rebuild in northern Melbourne. Handover completed 27/09/2013 and now moved in. Re: Advice wanted on home theatre+ package. 6Jan 05, 2014 2:49 pm The cost of the hdmi cable is to spread the profit around. They do a discount at the end which drops it down a bit but most people can pick up a 15m hdmi for under $100 that is hdmi 1.4 with Ethernet. Re: Advice wanted on home theatre+ package. 7Jan 05, 2014 7:38 pm Have you considered putting in blackout curtains over your window, and put the screen up that end? Would give you longer throw, and less requirement on zoom. Getting in touch with Matt at The Cable Connection is wise advice too. Can't remember the name, but there's a business south of Brisbane that manufacturers high quality projection screens at very good pricing. Would be worth following that up, and I believe Matt will know who I am talking about, as he also frequents the dtvforum.info Good luck, take your time, and don't rush. Re: Advice wanted on home theatre+ package. 8Jan 06, 2014 2:46 pm I think it is oztheatre screens. No connection at all. They get good reviews. If you are mounting the screen over the window you may want some sort of acoustic treatment plugging the window so it does not rattle with the bass sound. Just a thought. Cheers Mark Re: Advice wanted on home theatre+ package. 11Jan 08, 2014 7:53 am Hi Missy. Most has been said already. My main feedback would be getting the room right before installation. I note that the theater does not adjoin a bedroom which is great. However it will still easily transfer loud noise through your home. If this is not an issue, no problems but some simple steps taken at construction will make big differences. Firstly, sliding cavity doors leak sound badly. Avoid if you can and replace with a solid core door with acoustic seal. If plastering has not been done yet, try to get fyrchek gyrock used. Two layers with a green glue membrane between is great but if the budget won't stretch to green glue (about 2k) then you can just use 2x13mm layers of fyrchek and the mass of the walls will stop a lot of sound getting out. Should be done for all walls and ceiling. Windows will also leak sound. You can make up some simple Window plugs to use which will block a lot of sound. Lots of good articles at http://www.soundproofingcompany com or http://www.soundisolationstore com Happy to help more if I can. Once the room is built it is very expensive to fix. If the budget stretches, I would allocate money to sound isolation measures first. For ideas and more information, check out avsforum.com.
