Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 May 08, 2008 9:39 am Hi all,
Im new to the forum . Theres tonnes of great info on this Forum, thanks to all who put the work in. Were designing a house at the moment and the designer has done a gas fireplace in a "fake' chimney. We like the look of it and want a gas flame fire. Its proposed that our flat screen TV be above the fire. The builder says that he has this at his house and it seems fine . We have seen it in many homes but a friend told me he didint think we could do that because of the heat issues. Can anyone advise on this ??? thanks heaps MIke Mike 2/3 of the way thru the build Re: Flat screen above gas fireplace??? 2May 08, 2008 10:40 am Hey MJAB,
Yes you can do this...but... You need to be aware of the heat rising from the heater and the damage that can happen to your TV as a result. The best thing to do is creae a physical barrier between the heat and the TV in the form of a shelf/mantle. This works well as the heat is diffused away from the TV by the depth of the mantle. It also is a place to put pictures/vases etc. If you were to just hang a TV in a wall that had a heater below it you could be asking for trouble.... Re: Flat screen above gas fireplace??? 4May 08, 2008 1:06 pm _Al_ Yep....sounds like a really dumb idea if you ask me. What part does AL? Re: Flat screen above gas fireplace??? 5May 08, 2008 1:23 pm I recently posted the following on https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.p ... =fireplace
and the general consensus seemed to be that it was an OK idea provided I followed what I'd read on the internet (must be true). If any one has further to add I'm sure it would help MJAB and myself. to_do_list I recently purchased an established home and want to mount the TV above the fireplace where the current owners have mounted it (see below) which is on the hearth. From what I have read on the www there are some things I need to consider: - a suitable purpose built rack particularly one that provides vertical angle adjustability - use mechanical anchors not plastic as the plastic can release with heat - make sure the ambient temperature around the TV when the fire is on is less than 40 degrees C which you measure by taping a thermometer to the hearth and stokin' the fire Are there any other considerations....or does that cover it. http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff2/mikeb1968/Image3.jpg mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: Flat screen above gas fireplace??? 6May 08, 2008 5:12 pm TDL,
Cant believe I missed that thread... But the key here is the mantle between the fire and the TV. Re: Flat screen above gas fireplace??? 7May 08, 2008 8:22 pm Matt
The mantle is about 230 mm deep and about 400 mm above the top opening of the fire. Apart from the viewing height issues which are exaggerated by the real estate agent lens, the other approaches are sound? The thread exists and I don't want to send any body down the garden path. mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: Flat screen above gas fireplace??? 8May 09, 2008 9:21 am mattwalker _Al_ Yep....sounds like a really dumb idea if you ask me. What part does AL? Heat rises. And you put a tv in the path of the heat. Only a matter of time until it fails or the case warps Re: Flat screen above gas fireplace??? 9May 09, 2008 11:28 am AL,
Heat does rise but if you move the rising heat forward with the use of a shelf or mantle the risk is greatly (if not completely) reduced. Re: Flat screen above gas fireplace??? 10May 09, 2008 11:30 am Hope this makes sense, as you know we want to put the tv above a gas fire with a mantle, but what about the heat going up the chimney behind the tv?
Is there any heat at all that goes up behind with a gas fire?? I've only had a real fire in the past and the chimney got quite hot. Paula Re: Flat screen above gas fireplace??? 11May 09, 2008 12:01 pm Paula - I think it depends on how the gas fireplace is flue-d. If the flue goes up to the roof - then perhaps? But you can flue straight out the back through the wall - which may mean less heat goes above the fireplace. After 4 years - we're in! Re: Flat screen above gas fireplace??? 12May 09, 2008 12:05 pm Deflected or not, I think its a bad idea!
Radiant heat is still going to be a major issue. It will make all plastic or rubber components very dry and brittle. Failure will only be a matter of time. I'd suggest looking closely at the instructions, or contacting the TV manufacturer. Bet the warranty may be voided if mounted in such a hot place. Besides that, if the heater and TV were on at the same time, you'd get a heat haze distorting the image. Ash. Re: Flat screen above gas fireplace??? 13May 09, 2008 3:18 pm I have a Gas Log fireplace at home and can tell you the the entire mantle directly above and around it remains cold while it is on! Even the metal facia/surround just outside the heat box is cold to the touch.
Now, the fire is there more for it's ornamental value rather than as a genuine heater - you'd be pressed using it as the sole heater for the room let alone the house. However, it is still very warm and cosy in front of the fire, just that no heat seems to be absorbed at all by the surrounding mantle etc. (I was initally concerned about the actual stud-and-plaster wall it's mounted into getting hot, but it stays cold too). I don't think heat shimmer distorting your view will actually present itself as an issue either. I've never noticed even the slightest amount coming from mine when looking at the mantle piece (while stoking the fire ... oops, off topic... ) or anything above the fire. I'd put a plasma or LCD TV above my Gas Log fire with no concern at all. So with the heat messing up the TV out of the question, what about the comfortable viewing height? Is it really gonna be uncomfortable to watch TV at that height? BTW, fireplace is approx 600mm high and 1000mm wide. TV is gonna be 50" or so. Thanks \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ Re: Flat screen above gas fireplace??? 18Oct 29, 2008 10:22 pm dembi_2000 Bringing back a not so old topic... However you need to consider how annoying it will be watching a tv with a fire flickering below it. I try to elimate all lights near my tv as much as possible. A fireplace directly under it would annoy the crap out of me as much as the glare from the sun setting that comes through the blinds in mycurrent house whilst I'm watching TV.. ... but that's just my 2c Re: Flat screen above gas fireplace??? 19Nov 07, 2008 1:35 pm I have my tv mounted above my Gas Heater and there is not heat problems above the mantle it's as cold as ice. Also the bracket I brought enables me to tilt the tv down so that my head is not bent backwards to see it on the wall. All in all very comfortable more so than when it was on the tv stand. If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. Then quit. There's no use being a damn fool about it. W.C. Fields Brought Established. Re: Flat screen above gas fireplace??? 20Nov 12, 2008 3:44 pm Hi Wingies,
Can you tell me how high you mounted the fireplace and TV from the floor? Example: fireplace base from floor = 500mm TV base from floor = 1300mm Hope I make sense Thanks \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ Hi all, My first post, we are building a house and can’t decide the layout of the lounge room. We have a large N/W facing window and are wanting to have a wood slow… 0 13693 No the fireplace doesn’t work. It’s been enclosed. I’m not sure what was removed, as it was done quite some time ago - well before what I can see with photos online… 2 11530 I would probably render it and then paint it as per your other advice, or gyrpock over the top. 1 3303 |
