Browse Forums Home Theatre & Automation 1 Oct 01, 2013 9:02 am Hey all! Need some advice regarding our home theatre build in our new Fairhaven Home. We've purchased an Epson TW6100W from Matt on here which is a fantastic projector however my wife and I cant decide on what size screen to get! Our room is 4.1mx4.65m, with the throw being over the 4.65m range. We're looking to do two rows of couches, one hard up against the wall, the other 1.2m infront of the back row. We are trying to decide between a 110" and 120" screen... Both fit width wise the 120" will have 20cm to the roof and 1m to the floor which seems plenty... Can anyone advise which would suit the room more... Mostly we will be watching movies and sport on the theatre screen so I think bigger the better and as its 16:9 we will have a bit of loss at the bottom anytime we watch something in cinema scope (black bars obviously) so going 120" means we get the biggest image possible with that loss. I'd also like to be sure that the throw distance is fine for both sizes which it appears to be according to Epsons website but triple checking is important to us to be sure we are doing the right thing. Both screens will mean our fixed door has to stay fixed to have a standing speaker each side of the screen but that doesnt bother me. Plan below! Cheers, Met. I have a 110" with a distance of about 5m and whilst it is big - could handle the 120 viewing wise (if the room was wider to handle it). I think if you have 2 rows of seats in that space realistically the front row is only going to be ~2.5m from the screen - too close to resolve a 120". Obviously you have dealt with Matt for your projector and I can't recommend his screens enough too... really easy to put together and really good quality (and his service can't be matched). I'm sure he will contribute in here when he see's this too Hope that helps. Cheers, travis Re: Screen Size Advice 3Oct 04, 2013 8:58 am Thanks Travis, I'm starting to think rather than two rows we may do a raised platform for a back set against the window side, and then two single arm chairs on each side forward of the couch lower and angled in towards the centre of the screen... This would allow bean bags or more flexible seating if we had a few extras there but 99% of the time its just my wife and I or 4 at most... hard process. I think I'm just going to have to shoot it on the wall and try both at that distance. Very frustrating to work out I want the biggest most immersive experience possible particular at in full widescreen cinema movies but not at the cost of the room looking stupid... Re: Screen Size Advice 4Oct 05, 2013 10:44 pm Hi Metroid. Screen size is a personal choice and guides are just that. ... guides. My room is 6.0m deep x 4.2 wide and I have 2 rows of recliners. I use an anamorphic lens for cinema scope and my screen size is 145 inch diagonal. This is way outside the prescribed recommendations but I love the immersion. However, I only decided on screen size after watching about 20 or more movies. My recommendation is to purchase a large white piece of calico from spotlight and start watching movies at different sizes. You will soon learn what is right for you. Best 40 bucks I spent in my theatre build. Good luck! 2 Re: Screen Size Advice 5Oct 06, 2013 3:02 am Top Tip RenoGalore.... is your screen acoustically transparent or normal. cheers mark Re: Screen Size Advice 6Oct 06, 2013 10:32 pm I made my own screen. $480 landed for enough seymour AV acoustically transparent material, some straight maple lengths, l and t brackets and some spotlight black velvet over 3x1 timber frames. Dead easy day job. Handy to have a mate help you when stretching the material onto the frame but I couldn't be happier. 145 inch screen for about 700.00 bucks all in. There is something cool about having the sound come from behind the screen. Re: Screen Size Advice 7Oct 06, 2013 10:57 pm Mate thanks for the pics.... what subbies are you running. look like folded horns?? me likey. PM me if you don't feel like posting. Cheers Mark Re: Screen Size Advice 8Oct 06, 2013 11:05 pm Hi Mark. They are Danley Sound Labs DTS10 tapped horn subs. Came as a DIY kit from the USA on special for 950 each and a bomb for freight. you can buy them assembled for about 4k each i think. Weigh about 200 odd kilos each. Beer and pizza day with mates putting them together. Yep.... they go very well. The only limitation to the bass is my poor 1961 house frame. Re: Screen Size Advice 9Oct 07, 2013 1:02 am Thanks RG. Sorry for the thread derail OP. I guess what it does show is that it is money well spent thinking about things like subs as they form a big part of the enveloping experience. Re: Screen Size Advice 10Oct 07, 2013 7:10 am Hi Metroid. Apologies as well. Forgot it was your thread here. Was confused between this and another forum.... Dtv. Apologies for the screen construction intermission 2 Re: Screen Size Advice 11Oct 07, 2013 7:18 am Nah not at all that looks fantastic part of working out what suits me is seeing how others have done it and working that to suit my situation... great job by the way! Re: Screen Size Advice 12Oct 07, 2013 8:40 am Thanks mate. Good luck with your room. If you need any help feel feee to PM. Cheers. 2 Re: Screen Size Advice 13Oct 11, 2013 8:56 am Just as an update; We had our TV fail at home so set up our current lounge as a test theatre for the new home as it has the same throw distance. Over a couple of days we've tested various screen sizes between 110" and 130" and having watched a lot of material definitely feel anything less than 120" is going to feel underwhelming at full distance seating. Definitely think 120" is the size for us at that distance so we'll be going ahead at the size for sure we'll keep playing for the time being but definitely a good way to test things out for sure! Re: Screen Size Advice 14Oct 11, 2013 10:47 am Bummer about the TV but good that you are trying different sizes. As I said, my screen is 145 inch dia but that is a scope screen. That size would be enormous on a 16:9. As the eye is more sensitive to vertical movement than horizontal, I think 120 inch will give you the immersion you want in a 16:9. Bet this is the funnest research so far! Enjoy! You have no photo with your post. Best I can say is to remove an A&L flyscreen don't be afraid to distort the frame almost like a trapezium.
